Does this look like shingles?

Dd had shingles six months ago and I think she has it again.

She has a load of spots on her upper arm, just on her right arm. She says she's had them since the summer holidays but just thought it was spots so didn't tell us. So she's had them a good few weeks now. Says they're mega itchy. In fact the reason I noticed was because her top yesterday was covered in blood which had soaked through after she had scratched them.

Shingles tends to be in more of a cluster and the spots look more blistery. I think if she has had them since the summer she would be a lot more ill. I think its more likely to be a form of acne.

Is this only on one half of her body?
Shingles tend to follow a nerve path. They are SORE!

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 27/09/2015 16:55

Yes, just on one side of her body. Sort of start off on her shoulder and go down her arm in a wide line. I can't tell if they've been blistery or not as she's scratched them so badly.

Am going to take her to the Drs next week and have been and got her some multi vitamins in the mean time!

Hope it is acne.

She wasn't ill last time she had shingles, she just couldn't walk for weeks as it was across one hip/upper leg. But she was well in herself.

She reckons these spots feel the same as shingles did last time.

I've had shingles twice in the past year...always in exactly the same place, always in a line along my ribs (doctor said the virus attacks a nerve, so the blisters follow that nerve pattern). Mine looked more like blisters than spots and were SORE - they scarred and the scars are still sore. Worth checking with the go just in case...especially if she could come into contact with kids who haven't had chickenpox yet

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 27/09/2015 21:53

According to the dr last time someone can only get chicken pox from shingles if they get fluid from the blisters on their fingers and then stick their fingers in their mouth. Seeing as they're covered up under her top she should be fine from infecting others point of view.

I thought the virus settled in a "nerve node" ...so if they were on her leg then that's where they'd always be? SO it'd be unlikely for these to be shingles in a different place?

PeanutButterFiend · 28/09/2015 07:48

That's what I was told too Tondelaya...they will always appear along the same nerve

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 28/09/2015 08:15

Hopefully it's not then.

When I had shingles I don't remember itchiness, the spots were just mega sore.

Seeline · 28/09/2015 08:31

No you can get shingles in different nerves.
But generally the spots are painful, not itchy.
Everyone I have known with shingles had been really poorly too.

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 28/09/2015 08:33

She's got an appt on Thursday at the drs, but I'm at work. At 14yo she should be able to walk to the drs by herself and ask if it's shingles shouldn't she? I'm assuming if it is shingles the gP will be switched on enough to think if she's had it twice in six months she needs some further investigation.

Pharmacist yesterday says the Drs need to be looking at why she's got shingles again......if it is shingles.

Itchy might not be the right word, she says it's sort of under the skin tingling sensation but 20x stronger.

Unlikely to be shingles as its in a different place. Not likely to be insect bites if they have been in the same area for some time.

What about her face? Any central redness ie nose, chin, forehead? Blush/pimples on cheeks at each side of the nose? If she has some rosasea type symptoms, skin elsewhere on the body can develop problems too.

PeanutButterFiend · 28/09/2015 09:04

Hope it's not shingles! For the first couple of days when the blisters appeared on me, they were mega sore, but I didn't feel ill. After about 2 days of having the blisters, I was flat on my back ILL Sad maybe it will turn out to be something not as nasty as shingles Smile

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 28/09/2015 10:10

Her face looks ok.

My husband has had shingles in two different places. Once on the abdomen and this year on his head.

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 28/09/2015 21:58

Ive got a better quality photo here on my phone. To me quite a few of the spots do look like white blisters. But then dd has never been spotty so don't know what whiteheads/teen acne can be like if it's the start of this.
