How long off work with broken toe?

turkishly · 21/09/2015 14:37

Hi there.
I broke my toe just over four weeks ago. Hospital signed me off sick for a month. It is still hurting quite a bit and swollen (though healing normally). I can only weqr ine specific pair of shoes for ut to feel ok.
I work in a busy a and e dept and I dont think im fit to go back and walk on it for hours.
Any thoughts? Or am I being a wimp. Im thinking should be a least 6weeks before feels ok. Though hospital said may take few months to feel normal.

I still cannot get over the munchausens. Even by mumsnet standards, thats ludicrous. One episode of sick, even if it WAS exaggerated, would not mean munchausens.

Now I suggest you all save your outrage at the thought of my colleagues who are having to cover me, all the money im costing the NHS etc And gear it towards proper scroungers. .
By all means carry on working when ill, if your jobs are more important than your health. Some people live for work. Shame that they have nothing else.
Obviously to be on a parenting forum during the day indicates to me that either your jobs are so piss easy that you can,or you have some Junior doing your dirty work. Probably logged onto social media too.
Now im seriously done. Im done with over explaining myself to a bunch of strangers who are majorly over reacting and getting offended on my colleagues behalf.
If my managers feel I need to referred to occ health thats fine. I fully expect to be. I can self refer if I think its necessary.
Now I really have to go as ive wasted enough time on such a trivial topic.

OP posts:
Roussette · 25/09/2015 09:51

Stop being so ridiculous OP. You aren't ill! And going to work within 6 weeks of your toe injury will not jeopardise your health I promise you.

My very best friend is having a shoulder op on Tuesday. She will have a general anaesthetic, at least one night in hospital, and not be able to drive for 6 weeks, have arm in sling etc. Nasty op re-attaching a tendon. She plans to go to work if she feels well enough as soon as she can, she's hoping for the end of the week. Your toe is trivial in comparison.

And insulting everyone who doesnt agree with you is not the way to go. I'm on here because I only work part time and yes that is because I am far older than you and have semi-retired having worked all my life before you tell me I have a cushy number!

You brought up the trivial topic, not us!

turkishly · 25/09/2015 10:23

Wow is there to end to the tales if suffering, bravery, sheer determination and total dedication to work.
Ok I cant compete with operations, bones pinned back together and limbs amputated.
You win.
.I admit I asked a very stupid question. Only one that I can really answer.

OP posts:
MerdeAlor · 25/09/2015 10:42

ItsMine never in my life have I heard someone spout such total bollocks.

Munchausens??? Seriously?
Most astonishing armchair diagnosis I have ever heard.

OP, I'd suggest leaving this thread if I were you, PP obviously think because you can stand up for yourself voraciously you ought to be bullied. Poor show.

MerdeAlor · 25/09/2015 10:49

Sorry that remark was addressed primarily to Bumwad who suggested Munchausens.

bendybootpumpkinpatch · 25/09/2015 10:51

OP it's all got a bit heated but I think as a nurse if you were treating someone in a&e with a broken toe would you really suggest to them they refrain from work for SIX WEEKS ??
come on now. i work in a&e too and you know there are other things you can do . You will also have to go to occupational health as you have had more then 4 weeks off and it happens automatically. They could help you with s light duty back to work plan.

6 weeks for a broken toe IS taking the piss. you know it is

MerdeAlor · 25/09/2015 11:01

It is taking the piss to take anymore time off for a broken toe. I agree but the insults flying around here are crazy.

An occy health nurse asked me recently how long off for a broken toe because a midwife had been off for just over a month and had been referred to her. She also thought the time was excessive. The midwife pointed out she was on her feet the whole shift, sometimes having to run and crouch. occy health nurse accepted the reason.

OP has a right to the time off and frankly whatever our beliefs the NHS functions on the goodwill of the staff employed. It shouldn't. Fair pay and fair treatment without a culture of guilt for not flogging yourself to death for managers and MPs who don't care about you anyway.

KourtneyK · 25/09/2015 11:03

This thread is crazy, even by MN standards. The armchair diagnoses and competitive martyr stories are insane, as is requiring 6 weeks for a broken flaming toe and not even the big one!

TheFairyCaravan · 25/09/2015 11:07

DS2 had that shoulder operation, Roussette. He was the youngest patient the surgeon had ever done it on, it was quite a big job and he was in a lot of pain afterwards. However, he was chomping at the bit come the Friday (his was a Tuesday too) to go back to school. The surgeon said a week, but he went back on the following Monday. It was his AS year so he felt it was important to be there.

I'm here because I'm too sick and too disabled to work. I fucking hate it. I would give absolutely anything to be able to go to work in any job. I have no sense of purpose, people like you,OP, refer to me as a scrounger. It makes me want to cry. Infact I do cry often. You are bloody lucky you can work.

bendybootpumpkinpatch · 25/09/2015 11:11

i agree. the martyr stories and insults are silly but then so is the OP being ! The scroungers comment wasn't nice but i suspect OP is lashing out because she is on the defensive and the reason for that is because she knows 6 weeks is just silly.

Im here because im late shift tonight OP if that's ok with you.

turkishly · 25/09/2015 11:48

I am lashing out due to the sheer rudeness of the replies. Any genuine responses would have been appreciated. But lazy, sciver and MUNCHAUSENS! !
Anyway I get it guys. General consensus is that a month was already too much and any more is taking the piss.
So.no more sob stories please. Its embarrassing.
I cant beat someone having a limb amputated then returning to work the next day!lol lol

OP posts:
TheFairyCaravan · 25/09/2015 11:52

You got genuine responses, you just didn't like them.

KourtneyK · 25/09/2015 11:53

I actually think it's quite funny that the OP assumed everyone works Monday to friday, 9 till 5. Surely as an A&E nurse, she realises that some jobs are 24/7?! Grin

turkishly · 25/09/2015 12:03

Yes kortney luv. Quite funny.
WHAT IS funny though, is that now I can easily spot a mumsnetter about and about. It will all those people.muddling through their jobs with slings, funny boots, crutches etc.:-) like the modern day MR. Bean.

OP posts:
Orangeanddemons · 25/09/2015 12:16

The martyr thing on here is now getting a bit much. When you return to work, depends on the job you do.

I'm a teacher, due a big operation and will have to have the full six weeks off. I'm bending, lifting, carrying, and walking all the time. As it's a massive secondary I also get knocked about on the corridors. (Very narrow corridors and zillions of kids at changeover time). I'm rushing all the time, so again that is a consideration.

However, if I worked in a job where I sat down all day, I could probably return to work much earlier. And schools don't do the light duties thing as it messes up their insurance policies

SilverNightFairy · 25/09/2015 12:23

Hi, Op. I can't comment on your ability to return to work, that is between you and your physician. I will say to the poster who felt compelled to toss out a diagnosis of Munchausen Disorder, fuck off. Unless, you are a clinical psychologist able to diagnose over the internet, you really should pull your head out of your ass and jog on.

Good luck, Op. I hope you heal quickly.

Thanks to the sensible responses

Quietbatperson
I totally get having to go back to work as you get disciplned. I think a lot of places work that way. In fact, my own work place does. I will habe to attend a meeting and I will be monitored.
My point is with those who have or could be signed off for a period but return asap as a good will gesture.

OP posts:
BumWad · 25/09/2015 12:44

Haha.
I still think the painful toe for 6 weeks is in your head. Maybe not MUNCHAUSENS but there's something going on that is stopping you from returning to work with a broken toe which is not the broken toe its win? You haven't told us what kind of fracture it is?

IceCreamBandit · 25/09/2015 12:52

And I would dearly love to hear some of your professions. Your sick record. And anyone. Who has had more than a week off work before. (Must be someone).

Okay then- I'm a groom/yard manager for competition horses. Big, fit, sometimes hard to handle horses. I work 12 hour days as a base- they can often be much longer during events. It's a very physical job- lots of heavy lifting (bales of hay, bags of feed, mucking out for example), on my feet all day. I've worked with horses for going on 33 years. The longest I've ever taken off is six weeks- with a broken leg. I get bump and bruises all of the time and just have to get on with it. Today is my day off, but I'll be back tomorrow, complete with knackered ACL and a broken finger.

You're being a wuss and lazy OP.

MerdeAlor · 25/09/2015 12:54

Bumwad you are an ignorant bully. If you work in a hospital you should know that tossing around armchair diagnosis is ridiculous and deeply unprofessional.
Yes have a different opinion by all means but there is no need to bully.

MaudGonneMad · 25/09/2015 12:58

Bully? How is Bumwad being a bully?

OP asked a question, didn't like the responses, and started lashing out aggressively left right and centre. Pulling her up on that is not bullying.

SiencynArsecandle · 25/09/2015 13:04

Sorry to join in with the 'martyr' stories but I broke my big toe last September. I had no choice but to carry on doing what I do as I'm an unpaid carer at home for my husband. It still hurts like fuck at times and ortho reckon I've knackered it for life. But hey ho. I didn't have a choice to not work.

turkishly · 25/09/2015 13:17

Bumwad isnt a bully. Shes talking shit.
I havent got aggressive, just defending comments about me being a sciver, having a quite rare mental illness and that im.lazy. the lazy comments really rile me. Im about the least lazy person ever. Im.slim, fit.and active. As well as work I manage home, dcs, pets. I walk practically everywhere. In never sit down.and rest.
I very rarely go on mumsnet and certainly dont waste my days off or before work on here. I fact, im.not on.any social networking sutes as I cant bear the thought of chatting crap to vitual friemds all day. So wimp, I can take. Lazy not

Now I really really am breaking my own rules by spending so much valuable time on here. I will stick to style and beauty in future. If I need an answer to anything elae I will ask a real person.

OP posts:
turkishly · 25/09/2015 13:19

And im sorry to those who have to return to work because they are carers or dont get paid.
Luckily I have had the luxury to try and heal my injury. I dont want to end up . hobbling on a knackered foot in the future
