How long off work with broken toe?

turkishly · 21/09/2015 14:37

Hi there.
I broke my toe just over four weeks ago. Hospital signed me off sick for a month. It is still hurting quite a bit and swollen (though healing normally). I can only weqr ine specific pair of shoes for ut to feel ok.
I work in a busy a and e dept and I dont think im fit to go back and walk on it for hours.
Any thoughts? Or am I being a wimp. Im thinking should be a least 6weeks before feels ok. Though hospital said may take few months to feel normal.

Your post at 11:57 sums it up for me.

IMO your work ethic and attitude stinks.

HippyChickMama · 23/09/2015 12:13

I'm an A&E nurse too, I went back to work two days after fracturing my 3rd and 5th metatarsals but that's besides the point, you go back when you've recovered. Are you not under T&O through fracture clinic? I'd have thought that after being off for that long that occy health would want a consultant to sign you off as fit. And it's not the same in all A&Es either. I do consider my colleagues to be friends, I've been through some horrible times with them that no one else could possibly understand. And our management team are fantastic too, every member of staff is treated with respect and is valued, I don't think I'd want to work where you do.

Racundra · 23/09/2015 12:15

Wow, no you're not a wimp, you're just selfish and lazy.
I cannot believe you're a nurse, I've seriously never met one that cared so little about patients (thankfully).
If office jobs are so cushy, why don't you get one?
I actually mentioned teachers, you know they stand up for a large part of the day too.
How would the NHS continue if all (or tbh even 20%) its staff behaved as you are?

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 23/09/2015 12:21

no you're not a wimp, you're just selfish and lazy

My thoughts too. So long off for a broken toe?!!

turkishly · 23/09/2015 12:21

Er racundra
How do you know I dont care about patients? Because im off sick linger than you think is acceptable? I treat everyone at work with a great deal of care. Just because I jave no time for senior management doeant mean I dont care about my job
Shocking.
And my work ethic does not stink. Doea having no time off sick even when you may need it make you a better employee? Im quite baffled.
Look I asked how long on average peiple take off sick with a fracture. It seems to have turned into a boast about who got back the fastest with the worst break. And anyone who dares take paid sick is some kind of lazy scroungers. Thankfully I dont know any of you in real life, but if I did know you then you would see this couldn't be further from the truth.

OP posts:
turkishly · 23/09/2015 12:24

Perhaps some of you posters should give me a break down of acceptable time frames for sickness.
Like how long for flu? Bad back? How about toothache?
Just so I know for future reference.

OP posts:
ThroughThickAndThin01 · 23/09/2015 12:28

I'd say max of two weeks with a broken toe.

Toothache??

turkishly · 23/09/2015 12:33

Toothache, joke love.
Dr signed me off for a month. I didn't ask for it?
Some if you. Lot need to Lighten up
I know im not lazy. In fact, id probably say im one of the main grafters in my team. I do with with many lazy.people. and people who pass the buck to everyone else. Crafty people who always swing it to.leave early.
I have cried sometime as work been so bad.
However one episide of sick makes me lazy and.selfish.
Hmmm

OP posts:
Whatthefreakinwhatnow · 23/09/2015 12:36

for the second time, you are not sick, you have a broken toe. speak to occ health about a suitable limited duties plan. As you say, you have a good work ethic so you must be desperate to get back to it Grin

lighteningirl · 23/09/2015 12:36

If you hav full sick.pay and are not self employed why

Sums up everything that is wrong with the public sector would give you a shocked face if I knew how. Hope you feel better soon.

LoveChickens · 23/09/2015 12:37

I don't even believe you're a nurse. What a load of shit.

TheFairyCaravan · 23/09/2015 12:37

Lighten up? Hmm

Could you imagine if a surgeon went off for 6 weeks with a broken toe?

turkishly · 23/09/2015 12:40

No im not a nurse. Im lying. Jesus christ. You lot are unreal.
I
In fact, you sound a lot like my colleagues-bullies.

Fatfreefaff · 23/09/2015 12:40

I took a week off sick when I fractured three toes and a bone in the side of my foot. I have a 'cushy' office job. My manager thought this was very reasonable as did my team. It took ages to recover btw.

As OP has medical support for taking time off and as her workplace are not willing or able to adapt her duties, why on earth should she be in pain or risk permanent damage to herself because some people don't agree with sick leave, or consider they are a better judge than medical professionals.

lighteningirl · 23/09/2015 12:41

Wow wrote my post before I read the other reactions just read whole thread and am greatly cheered to see such a great response there is hope for the NHS perhaps you could work elsewhere

LoveChickens · 23/09/2015 12:42

You cannot even construct a sentence properly. There's no way you're in the medical profession, especially with this attitude of yours.

Oh and yes, you're being absurd having 6 weeks off for a broken toe. How silly. Bet you wouldn't have 6 weeks off if you didn't get sick pay. Lazy.

TheFairyCaravan · 23/09/2015 12:46

No one is bullying you! Get a bloody grip.

turkishly · 23/09/2015 12:53

Cant construct a sentence? How rude. Im typing on phone and difficult with small keys. Nasty.
And thanks fat free. When I say cushy office jobs, what I mean is not physical.

I am genuinely shocked how people are getting irate about how much time im having off. As if they pay my wages.
And im not lazy. This is a one off injury. Is it any less.valid than time off for stress? I work with many people who habe had months off with stress. Ive suffered mega stress including bereavement. So perhaps they are just lazy. Same difference isnt it

FannyFifer · 23/09/2015 12:54

I've had broken toes on several occasions, seem to be prone to toe fractures.
I am also a nurse, I just put a bit of padding around the toe & went to work.
Pain killers if it's sore.
I haven't needed any time of work when I have broken a toe.

itmustbeglove · 23/09/2015 12:54

As a fellow nurse I do have some sympathy for you Op; you're in pain, can't wear your work shoes & Management don't give a fig so you feel undervalued.

4 weeks is a long time to be off with a minor injury & the fact that you're posting here suggests you might be feeling uncomfortable or guilty.

Occ Health & your manager should be in discussions with you about returning soon, even if it's a phased return.

TheFairyCaravan · 23/09/2015 12:55

As if they pay my wages.

Who do you think pays your wages? And who do you think is paying for the Agency nurses who are covering you?

MajesticWhine · 23/09/2015 12:56

As if they pay my wages.

Er...

reallybadidea · 23/09/2015 12:57

Some of these posts are vile, especially yours LoveChickens. Wtf has sentence construction got to do with being a nurse?! You should read some of the ungrammatical, illegible nonsense some of the doctors I work with write.

If the abuse on this thread is even a little bit like the crap she has to put up with at work from the general public like you lot, no wonder she isn't rushing back, and I for one don't blame her.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 23/09/2015 12:59

Think you are about the only one tbh reallybadidea

The op has already had four weeks off work paid, and now fancies a few more weeks? I mean, come on.

turkishly · 23/09/2015 13:01

Cant construct a sentence. Wow how nasty and rude. Actually im typing on a very small phone. Sorry im not as literate as you.
Thanks fat free.
When I say cushy office jobs I mean a job that isnt so physical as mine.
Im genuinely shocked at how posters are personally upset at me taking sick leave. And all the lazy comments. Whag has lazy got to do with it. Ive injured my toe. Im not lazy. I do and always have worked. Im not claiming benefits. Just sick pay with hospital dr and gp advised.
I do know many people including work colleagues that have had months and months off with stress. Is that a more valid reason?
Im constantly stressed. Ive suffered a bereavement and a pregnancy loss in the past but went to work very soon after both.
Quite shocking responses

Id love to know how hard exactly some of the posters on here who are calling me lazy work? Apart from the ones who have limped back to nhs jobs. Doea anyone work 12 hrs in a physical job, staying up all night and on their feet?
