dd's cough - do I go to chemist or doctors?

dd had a cold at the weekend. That has gone but she's now got quite a cough.

I was going to go to the chemist and ask them for advice. DH says to go to the doctors.

Chemist or Doctors? Which one?

how old?

JARM · 30/11/2006 09:04

depends on age

if an older child, chemist, if a baby, doctors

CantWaitForTheSnow · 30/11/2006 09:06

7 months. Don't want to be seen as over reacting by doctor, don't want to do the wrong thing by going to a chemist.

Sorry, dizzy 1st time mum moment

Doctor. Don't worry - they are (or should be) always happy to see a baby, esp for a first-time mum. It will set your mind at rest, and will only take the doctor a minute to see you.

How did things go, did you manage to get seen today?

Missybaby · 30/11/2006 19:51

hey, i have exactly the same problem. dd also 7 months but she's had the cough for about 6 weeks now but she's also had about 3 different colds.

family say it's what happens to babies... me and DH are worried.

would appreciate if you could advise what the doc said to you, then perhaps i'll go to docs myself.

thanks

Phoned docs and spoke to a dragon of a receptionist who said "sorry, no appointments available until Monday at the earliest"

Went to lovely chemist and asked her for advice - she said "she needs to see a doctor, just insist"
Went to docs, feeling really brave and ready to take on the world. Saw lovely receptionist who fitted me in within 10 minutes. Saw lovely reassuring doctor. No serious problem with dd, Dr just recommended benecol (sp?) tickly coughs so she wouldn't have a bad night.

As you can tell from the time of this post, the medicine hasn't really worked. At least I know now she has been checked out and there are no serious problems.

Thanks for advice everyone

Missybaby That sounds like a very very long time. I'd definietly get it checked out.

My DD is 14 months and has had a cough on and off for months. Repeated trips to the docs have all resulted in "its a viral infection, nothing we can do, let it run its course". I've tried various over the counter medicines but she still has this cough, or wheezy chest. I'm back at the docs on Mon. Sigh.

Missybaby · 01/12/2006 08:11

thanks cantwait, glad your dd is ok. can't believe you were posting at 3am though - poor thing!

i have developmental review with HV this morning. i will see what she says. i then have her pneumoccocal injection on monday morning. may get doc to see her then.

Similar situation here, ds has had a cough for months. It's worse again now (having taken a bit of a back seat whilst he had a tummy bug instead!) and it's waking him up, grimness. The chesty cough medicine we have makes him throw up immediately. I think I'll take him to the GP next week before we go on holiday.

christMissybaby · 01/12/2006 15:59

well, the HV said that she didn't think the cough was anything to worry about (and of course today dd has hardly coughed at all, which is a good thing!) so, i do feel better. i'll keep an eye on it though.

tortoiseshell · 01/12/2006 16:02

Missybaby, ds2 has had a cough for 6 weeks as well. Took him to GP this morning, she had a listen, said his chest was totally clear, and it could be some sort of reflux when he's lying down, and that he would grow out of it!

tortoiseshell · 01/12/2006 16:02

MB - just to add, ds2 is 7 months as well.

christMissybaby · 01/12/2006 19:19

that's funny tortoiseshell eh? a relief too!

HV also said to me raise the cot with a couple of books underneath to help drain the chest and she also said i could make the bathroom steamy (run hot shower or bath) and sit in there with dd for 10 mins to help her chest.

what date was your dd2 born? my dd on 27th. are you on the april postnatal thread???

tortoiseshell · 01/12/2006 20:10

May 1st for ds2. We've had the cot propped up on books for weeks now! Must be very uncomfortable for him! I was relieved that his chest was clear. My other two had long loasting coughs as well, but somehow ds2 seems more fragile than they did!
