Colonoscopy - Clear Out, what can I expect?

TreeHuggerMum1 · 21/09/2015 12:20

I was diagnosed with Anaemia a few months ago and GP couldn't find the cause, and then had a Gastroscopy which found nothing, I am due for a colonoscopy on Wednesday and at 6pm today need to start the "clear out".
Just wondering what to expect with the clear out and then the procedure?
Will I be ok to manage 3 kids after / walk to school to collect them?
Anyone had something similar?

It depends if they offer you any form of sedation after the procedure. I had some sedation ( was awake but woozy is only way could describe it) and was told no driving or care of my young son for 24hours. I would not have been able to take to school morning of procedure as needed to be by the toilet.

You do need to be very close to the toilet once you have started the prep. So I don't think you will want to be walking to school and back once you have started having your drinks. You are fine to look after your kids at home though.
After the procedure you can do things as normal. No driving if you have had sedation, but otherwise you will be fine.

I've had two without sedation or painkillers - I don't recommend it.

How old are your kids? Can they sort look after themselves if you have a packed lunch dinner made up for them beforehand.

I will definitely opt for sedation.
The kids are almost 4, 6 and 10.
The school is round the corner from home so pretty close.

Have you been told to start "clearing" this evening? It seems quite early for a wednesday procedure. Don't worry, it's no fun, but it wasn't nearly as bad as I expected.

Not really? My mum has to have them every couple of years and the time scale for prep is the same as this.

I have had those meds for other types of investigations and TBH the school being round the corner is too far away! When I needed the loo it had to be NOW! You may find you simply cannot wait at all - it's far more fierce than just wanting a 'normal poo'. IMO you won't be able to walk your kids to school in the morning if you take the laxatives tonight.

Depending on the prep..
I have had several colonoscopies.. sometimes the million senna plus drink, and sometimes the Moviprep X 2 gallons type.

I prefer the latter although it's grim trying to drink it all. I usually find the first gallon does nothing...so I worry that it won't work.. then I start the second gallon and from then on I'm tethering myself to the toilet with a seatbelt Grin

Drink as much clear fluids as you can manage..it really helps as you want a spotless colon (my doc congratulated me on my last one..and I could see on the screen it really was spotless!)

I have had sedation and non sedated.. neither have been a problem. I like the one where you have a relaxant but stay conscious as it's cool to watch them going round the bends! (You shouldn't drive after tho)

I find I still have the runs the following day..can't go to work as it's still pretty impressive!

No school runs... it's really hard to walk let alone gallop home trying to clamp your anal sphincter Grin

All over and done with.
I've never known diarrhoea like it. Horrific.
They said because I take iron tablets I was probably very backed up. They found a polyp/growth and have removed it and are testing which could also explain another reason I was blocked.
Does anyone know what happens now? Do they grow back?

I had a growth removed, not the best of types so had a further colonoscopy 6m later to check all removed/no more and then as that was clear had one 5yrs later - clear. Then discharged. No idea what is normal'nhs procedure though.
