Hi everyone

haven't been around for a while (poorly babies). Can anyone help with these questions...

  1. Ds has been a bit wheezy since Sunday. Doc says he may be asthmatic (since dp has terrible asthma). She has told me to buy these things:

esteaglato de prednisolina
hidrocloruro de Bomhexina

He's been getting both twice a day. But does anyone know what they are? (Spanish drug names are usually easy to translate if you know the English word).

  1. meanwhile dd has an ear infection. She's on double-dose antibiotics because she had mastoiditis in January, and the doc said to give them to her for 7 days (actually she said 5 days first, then corrected herself). But the bottle is about to run out after 5 days - should I buy another one?

Prednisalone (I guess that is the first one)is a steroid, my father had it for a long time when he had lung problems

Looking up the other SP

SenoraPostrophe · 12/05/2004 10:39

thanks Easy - yes, that would be it (there's a typo there - should be prednisolona)

Having trouble finding the other one. Who makes it? It's probably a trade name for something. In the UK medicines often have the trade name with the generic in much smaller print (often in brackets) somewhere else on the label

SenoraPostrophe · 12/05/2004 12:13

The other one is a generic name: the trademark name is Bisolvon. made by Boehringer Ingelheim. It may not be used in the UK.

bisolvon website here

doh - I only serahced on the generic name.

It says you should refer to the packaging for the dose as it varies from country to country. I wonder why?

Oh, SP, massive sympathies with the ear infections (and the rest of course). Dd has had one off and on since mid January
I would do the full seven days and buy another bottle if necessary. I am normally not keen on antibiotics for little children, so this time, with the support of our GP, we didn't start our dd on them as soon as the ear went. And it just kept running and running...so we cashed in our amoxycillin scrip and within 24 hours the ear had dried up. So I guess they do work.
Hope everyone starts to feel better soon and the asthma diagnosis is a false alarm. Has ds been checked/tested for bronchiolitis BTW?

SP, because medicine, and even pharmacology, isn't an exact science. Different countries have different practice. For eg. I hear that in Germany low blood pressure is seen as a problem that needs to be treated - in the UK is seen as OK (or even positive ie not high blood pressure). The US prescribes some drugs for kids which are contra-indicated here. Different countries, differerent drug licensing and prescribing systems and advice. (Although is an EU-wide system for licensing now, the way they are used can still be different).
Hope your little one is better soon,

god knows what esteaglato means but prednisolone is not to be messed with in oral form. Eg if you take it for any period of time you have to "wean" yourself off it, if you stop suddenly then the symptoms will return 10 fold. It has horrible side effects too!

suedonim · 12/05/2004 21:56

Prednisolone is indeed a powerful drug but it can also be a life-saver. Ds1 has had short, tailored, courses when his asthma spiralled out of control. Side effects are very unlikley on a short course. Has the Dr given you a plan or schedule for your ds, to wean him off, SP? It's usually given for just five or seven days.

CountessDracula · 13/05/2004 10:58

Oh I totally agree Sudeonim - I have had week long courses for bronchitis and for my Crohn's before with no ill effects and stopped immediately. Senora how long has the doctor said to take them for?
