Gallstone attack. What the hell can I eat?!

After about a year of intermittent niggling pain in my upper right abdomen, which I had passed off as being linked to my IBS, I keeled over in agony during the early hours of yesterday morning and had to go to out of hours. I was seen by the on duty GP who examined me and told me that she suspected I had gallstones and was having an attack. I am going to see my own GP this week to arrange a scan but she advised me to eat a plain, fat free diet.

So yeateday I ate a dry piece of toast, some brown rice and a quorn burger cooked in fry light at teatime. This morning I have eaten a boiled egg and that's all because I don't know what the fuck I can eat, and I am terrified that I will suffer pain like I did yesterday again. I've never experienced pain like it in my life and I never want to feel it again. It was triggered I think by the roast pork I ate for tea on Friday night. It is still niggling today but is big as bad.

So any advice would be appreciated. What the hell can I eat?

no to eggs, or anything with ANY fat in at all - and nag your Dr to get you an ultrasound and on the list to get the bastard thing out.

It got to the point if i ate anything i'd be in agony - i lost four stone in 8 weeks Shock

Childbirth is a walk in the park compared to gallstones (i gave birth to a 9 pounder with no pain relief).

I was going to say soup, soya milk helps, tea cakes have no fat, tuna in water, look for fat free stuff in the supermarkets. You`ll get better at spotting the fat free stuff.

Jacket potatoes, cereal, toast, baked beans, soup, salads, rice, plain pasta and sushi. This is what I lived on pre-operation and I just about got through.

No eggs, cheese, chips, pizza, or pasta sauces.

No eggs, no fat, no bread! No cheese.

My OH has lost half a stone in a week with the same issue.

You may find you can eat whatever you like- I never found what triggered mine.

I had attacks after eating a Quorn ham sandwich, a slice of pizza and leek and potato soup. (Not all at once!) whereas half a baguette with butter and brie caused me no ill effects.Confused

The one thing did seem to help was eating little and often.

I hope you manage to avoid any more attacks and get your gallbladder removed soon. Its so painful.Sad

You have my sympathy. Stick with simple foods, salad, steamed fish, rice, veg, skimmed milk, low fat porridge, low fat curry etc. In fact, any foods lab led low fat are going to be your friend. I had some ice cream and it nearly killed me, an onion bhaji landed me in A&E Blush.

I'm currently 6 days post op and still on a relatively restricted diet but going to try a lovely yummy squidgy chocolate cake later. I've missed chocolate. And cream. And buttery toast. Grin

I have gallstone attacks for about a year after I had ds. I was all set to get my gallbladder out until 2 things happened. 1. My mother had her first ever attack aged 69 and was told she probably has them for decades and 2. My attacks stopped for 6 months before the surgery which I had delayed because I am a teacher and wanted the surgery while I was off for the summer. It is 2.5 years since my last attack. Food made absolutely no difference to. I was BF at the time and all but one attack occurred during BF or shortly after so I think that and the pregnancy were my main factors.

I could only eat plain chicken and a baked potato then even that triggered attacks. Getting my gallbladder out was the best thing

I looks like fatty meat is a trigger for me, hence this severe attack after eating roast pork loin (and roast potatoes cooked in the fat). I'm ok today but still feeling a slight dull ache in my right side and in my back.

I had no idea that gallstones could be so painful. I was crying in pain and no position was easing it.

Hi i was just diagnosed with gallstones and want to know what i can eat since i am going away in a few days and will be eating at restaurants but i know you have to be on a low fat diet? what are options i can eat at restaurants

Well whoever said they gave natural childbirth and that gallstone pain is worse is either crazy or please tell me how you did that. I've had 3 kids... each birth very painful... and I'm currently pregnant with my last one and found out I have at least 10 big half inch gallstones. It's incredibly painful... but I wouldn't say as painful as childbirth... at all...
But then again childbirth is over in a shortish amount of time... whereas day after day after day the gallbladder can hurt.

Kind of deep diving right now because I love food and cooking... and being pregnant I'm super hungry and want snacks... so I'm needing to figure out a whole new way to make food now... because I can't just throw butter in desserts or cook with butter and automatically it makes the food good...

So what foods/ingredients that you typically cook with can be replaced with other foods/ingredients healthier for the gallbladder??? I'm starving and having cravings so please give me some ideas.

I find eggs a big trigger.but baked beans cornflakes and semi skimmed milk are fine.i haven't worked out what I can and can't eat properly yet.but I'm going abroad for a month next year.ny partner and I are celebrating retirement and I'm concerned as to what I will be able to eat any tips would be Very welcome
