Hi Fuzzimal
I'm a medical secretary. Not medically qualified to give you information about the procedure but just wanted to let you know you can phone the consultant's secretary and she can send some information through to you, or she can get the consultant to dictate a letter explaining it to you. I'm sure the endoscopy dept would be happy to help with any questions you may have too.
HTH - hope all goes well. x

My dd2 (8 months) might need one as well, and just wanted to ask about this too.
When I have had them, a tube with a little camera on the end was brought in via the anus into the large intestine to see if there is anything wrong (sorry if too much information).
I don't know very much more about it but in dd2's case she would be under anaesthetic, which means that she would have to fast from either the night before or the following morning (that will be an interesting experience..).

Have just seen Sparkler's post - that's good advice, will do that too; thanks!

Sorry, fuzzimal; I jumped to conclusions.. I confused endoscopy with a colonoscopy - which is what dd2 might have. It can be, but isn't always, the same.

Before I cause any more confusion, ignore my bit please. Best to stick to Sparkler's advice! All the best though - hope all goes well.

Sparkler1 · 29/11/2006 20:52

Julen the procedure you had sounds like a colonoscopy
The endoscopy will go "down" rather than "up" IFYWIM.

fuzzimal · 29/11/2006 21:09

Thanks for that

The little bit of info i did get was that she would only be having the endoscopy, there is no need for the colonoscopy as she is not having diaroeha. She will only be treated as a day patient.

hi my ds aged 2 had an endescope in october.he had an anaesthetic and was down in theatre for about an hour including in recovery.no ill after effects accept from the anaesthetic

fuzzimal · 29/11/2006 21:47

Thanks its nice to know she should be ok.
Its taken us along time to get to this point. DD has had many tummy aches since she was a baby (and some really nasty pains). Consultant said he is 99.9% sure there is nothing wrong but will do the endoscopy. My concern now is that we have put her through all this, it will not show anything up and we are no further forward.

fuzzimal, my ds had it done because he "apparently" has had milk intolerance since 4months old, they found nothing. he also has had belly aches and screamed for hours on end from birth. he hasnt had milk since 4months, then we had to cut soya/gluten also.

for the last 2 weeks i have been giving him butter on normal bread (had special bread before)and some chocolate pieces daily and other than the odd bout of diarrohea hes been fine.

i dont know if hes ever been intolerant to the foods or grown out of the them. sad if hes had nice foods withdrawn for no reason. his little face now when he tries a new food is an absolute picture

good luck

p.s the most traumatic thing for you and dd will be when they put a cannula in her hand, make sure she has the magic cream and be prepared for lots of crying if they cant find a vein. my ds has to have it done in his foot because his veins in his hands are non-existant!

fuzzimal · 29/11/2006 22:21

She's had a cannula before and wouldn't allow anyone to use magic cream. It was very tramatic for her so we are trying to persuade her to have it this time.

If this doesn't give us any answers then the only thing i can think of is it maybe something in her diet.It comes and goes alot, she can be poorly for weeks and then really well for weeks. Last time she was well for 13 wks and at the moment she's been ill for 5 weeks. She seems to have a constant ache with bouts of really bad pains mixed in.

hope you get some answers for dd. iknow how stressful and depressing it is, my ds has been well for 10days now and thats on the new foods, hes normally only well for 4/5 days a month bit like your daughter.

im hoping that he will not revert back to the screaming, clingy, bellyachy, non-eating boy. id describe my ds's symptons as like colicky and he lays around like an invalid and doesnt eat. im sure it must be food related that starts him off.

i do hope the endescope goes ok and if it is negative carry on being a fantastic mum and like a lot of doctors have told me, sometimes you never get to the bottom of these episodes of pain and they just disappear. im really hoping my ds's have.

fuzzimal · 29/11/2006 23:12

Screaming ,clingy, bellyaching ,non eating sounds very familiar.

Thanks so much for your replies. I do feel alot better now about her having the endoscope and it should be done in the next couple of weeks, so not too long to wait.At least we'll know one way or the other.
