Hello,

I've posted many times before about my 3yr old ds. He's been under the weather for many months and no-one seems to know why.
He's very very tired all the time and doesn't want to go out and do any of his usual activities. He's been tested for diabetes which was negative.
On Monday I saw a lump at the back of his throat (he told me he had a toothache so I was looking!) and took him back to the gp. It didn't go very well with the gp and she said that she couldn't tell me what was wrong, couldn't diagnose the tiredness as they needed to resolve the lump/blister in his throat first. I tried to explain that he's had the same symptoms for many months now but she wasn't prepared to listen!
Unfortunately she also didn't know what the thing in his throat was and told me to start him on antibiotics should he not improve-she didn't know if it was viral or bacterial.

So...I'm really worried about him and have been for some time. The blister/lump isn't red or angry looking and he also doesn't seem to notice it at all. He hasn't complained of a sore throat in the last few months at all. He has had a bad cold/cough over the last few days which seems to have cleared (prior to anti-b's).
Does anyone have any idea of what this could be? Any experience of children getting blisters/lumps in their throat?

I'd be really grateful for any advice-I am so worried about him. TIA x

No experience of this, but I would start him on the antibiotics sooner rather than later if you don't see any improvement in his throat. I think if it were me I would want to see it looking better by now, if you noticed it on monday..

when you say very very tired how does this present itself? Can you describe a normal ish day for him?

Try going to another gp in the practice. It sounds like you are scared that there is something seriously wrong with him. Tell the GP that you want a refferal to a paediatrition. If you nag them they will pass you on to someone else. It really doesn't matter if you get "over anxious mother" written on your file, if you think he is ill then he needs a diagnosis.

It may be Hand foot and mouth - that is a virus that causes listlessness lack of appetite and blisters in the mouth hands and feet. Very common in small children and usually nothing to worry about.

The other option is to take him to the dentist. They are trained to recognise mouth problems, probably better than gps.

Thanks trice and sunnysideup. I am scared that something else ig wrong. I'm not worried about the 'anxious mother' tag as I"m sure they have decided that already.
I have an appt on Friday with another gp who has been recommended so thanks for that suggestion.

I did start him on the anti-b's on Monday night; he doesn't seem to be any different and the lump/blister is still there.
His tiredness seems to kick in from midday onwards. He has spent many months not wanting to go out and do his ususal activities; and this is a child who ran everyone ragged. We now think it's because he's so tired the thought of these activites is just too much for him.

His appetite doesn't seem to be too affected, he still eats pretty well. I'm at a loss really. His urine was tested for diabetes but was negative-I really don't know! Thanks for the replies. I'm not leaving the Gp surgery on friday without a resolution.

If you are worried about the ab's you could ask them to do a swab for bacterial infections so at least you'd know what they are treating. The Practice nurse could probably do it for you. tbh I'd say for it have gone on this long with tiredness etc it is probably bacterial. Once the lump has been treated you could reassess whether he picks up mroe generally or not.

I agree with the suggestion about going to the dentists and a paediatrician referral - I hope your ds gets better soon.

Piffle · 30/11/2006 12:37

has he bene tested for iron deficiency/anaemia
Sounds liek he is run down poor little guy.

rabbitrabbit · 30/11/2006 12:46

Thanks everyone. I've been pushing for a blood test (whilst not really wanting him to have to go through it ) for a while now.
The last visit to the gp resulted in the antibitotics and I was told that they couldn't really proceed until he'd taken them and we'd seen if there was any result.

Thanks for your help, hpefully it will be just a bacterial infection and we can move on from there x

How was your appointment yesterday?

rabbitrabbit · 02/12/2006 10:53

Hi belgo, we had to re-arrange as he was still on the antobiotics. I spoke to the GP who said they wanted to wait until he'd finished them before proceeding. So, we're going next Friday now.
Thanks for aksing though
