Tingling tongue - help! Driving me insane!

My tongue is tingling all the time and I'm not sure why. Mouth feels like I've eaten raw onions or too many wine gums - all tingly and tangly and over-stimulated!

Had bad sore throat last week and used anti-bacterial lozenges and mouthwash. Have I destroyed my mouth's mini eco-system???? No white patches or ulces etc so don't think it's thrush. Help, please. It's driving me mad!

tinker, sounds horrible. Any better yet?

Sorry I can't say anything more constructive.

Tinker, I had a very sore mouth recently and used a mouthwash called Corsodyl which was brilliant in relieving the pain (ie I don't know whether it does that much for whatever is actually wrong, but it helps in the meantime!). My dentist said you shouldn't use it within an hour of brushing your teeth and it can discolour your teeth if you drink tea/coffee too quickly after using it. You can get it over the counter at any chemists or on prescription (if you're not paying!)

tigermoth and bundle - thanks for replies. Was going to reply to myself since thought NO-ONE was interested in my tingling tongue

Read the packet of lozenges today - says may cause allergic reaction and sore tongue!!!

But how to un-allergicise (?) it? Still driving me mad. May try that mouthwash bundle, but wonder if I should just leave things to get better by themselves.

Where's robinw? She knows about these things?

I bet you were allergic to something in one of these products - I suffered a similar excruciating reaction to a new brand of toothpaste a few years ago. It went after a few days and I had thought thrush too. I do hope you feel better soon. I have to confess I slapped bonjela all over my tongue...and then couldn't talk.

manna · 01/05/2002 19:51

lol marina - hope you didn't try anything more exotic than talking?

bundle · 01/05/2002 19:53

tinker, sorry you thought we'd all forgotten about you! tongues are pretty sensitive so it could be the lozenges, but as doctors get v little training in oral medicine I'd ask a dentist

Tinker · 01/05/2002 21:56

Laughed at that Marina. Have decided to stick to liquorice and blackcurrant sweets for now.

Vitamin B12 deficeincy does strange things to your tongue. Trust me im a nurse!!.

Tinker · 01/05/2002 22:09

Tinker, I read somewhere that one cause of recurring mouth ulcers is lack of vitamin B12 and as a vegetarian I decided to try and cultivate a taste for marmite. About year down the line, I can't remember having had any ulcers since I started having marmite on toast 2/3 times a week. HTH

trudles · 02/05/2002 20:55

tinker
does your tongue apear quite red and swollen if so this is called glossitus (immflamation of the tongue). You may be a bit run down. It can be due to vitamin B12 defiency. Best sources are red meats, offal and fish and if your veggie your only hope is marmite and b12 tablets. Or it could be lack of folic acid, found in green veg, citrus fruit, seafood, cerials and wholemeal bread.drink plenty of clear fluids cut down on tea, coffee and the lozenges. I sometimes wonder whether mouthwashes actually make you mouth worse because they can dehydrate your mouth.

Thanks trudles and sis. Much better today, definitely think it was a reaction to the lozenges! Boots own, blackcurrant - AVOID! Also, stopoed chewing gum today - noticed that made it worse yesterday.
