Muscle Spasms when Asleep

Does anyone else get muscle spasms just as they're going to sleep? It's usually a leg or an arm which jerks suddenly just as I drift off but the other night my entire body kind of went into a spasm. It wakes me quite violently then I have to try to get to sleep again, not always easy. Sometimes I have that 'falling' sensation with it but not always. Is there a cure?

yes very normal apparently.
Bloody annoying though

yes, jerking/jolting very normal. however muscle spasms that continue can be very painful. i suffer muscles going into spasm a lot (neck, shoulders, back), and it can last for days, then i feel achey for weeks after.

Is it really normal??? I've never had it until recently. What's the point of them?

Yes
REALLY annoying, usually while I am semi-dreaming about walking along, coming to a step or similar and then I trip/fall and WAHEY off goes a leg/arm!

Is normal, so unlikely to be a cure...

I'm going to have to live with it, aren't I? Oh well, at least I now know it's nothing to worry about.

Google Restless Leg Syndrome...honestly! there are some suggestions that it could be caused by a mineral imbalance. DH and his entire male family line has it. I'm ready to hack both his legs off by 4am. There's supposed to be some drug that was developed for Parkinsons that works, but unless it's causing you massive problems (ie divorce!) prob best to live with it!

Brummie, if it causes a divorce I'll be counter-sueing re dh's snoring!!

I don't have the symptoms of Restlss Leg Syndrome, the fidgety, itchy stuff, but they mention Periodic Limb Movement Disorder which is more like it. There doesn't seem much to be done, though I think I'll try some stretching before I go to bed and see if that helps.

Revisiting this to say that stretching has helped!! When I'm having a 'jerky' night it usually starts with very minor twitches in an arm or leg. If I then stretch myself out fully, flexing all my muscles (still lying in bed, I don't get up or anything!) for a few seconds it prevents any more spasms. Easy to do and seemingly effective so I hope it works for others.
