He went to bed at 6.45, exhausted, he has a terrible chesty cough and a nose running like a tap. He's burning up. He's had paracetamol, ibuprofen, ashton's powder, calgel, bongela, and a cough syrup(-all as directed and not poured down his throat at once!) He's been up 3 times already and had whined a couple of times in his sleep. I just thought I'd ask the wise ones if there's anything else I could do next time he wakes?
It's the first of his back teeth btw, both sides bottom, and he's 15 months old.

He is also vomiting, 6am today and twice at 4am yesterday. He's just been up again.

Oh, the poor little mite - Im not sure if theres anything else you can do - just cuddles and kisses. The back teeth are really hard work and for my ds the normal treatment didnt work. i think its the cough that makes them sick, so we used to give medicine for that and hope for the best. I hope hes better soon and you dont have too bad a night.

prop up mattress a bit....sit him on your knee in the bathroom with the door shut and hot taps running to make it steamy and let him steam for a while..might clear the congestion a bit

sounds poorly as well as teething adn you are doing everything you can!

Thanks both. Not sure if the two are connected, he's having an awful time. He's been up another twice, for a cry cough and cuddle. He sounds so sore and hoarse. The coughing has made him gag but I was thinking it was the mucous making him sick, who knows. He's hardly eaten so is loving his milk, it's just not agreeing with him. He perked up this afternoon and I thought he was getting better but he seems much worse now. Thanks for your support, dh is in Spain so I appreciate it a lot!

bramblina, try homeopathic granules, you can buy a nelsons version or boots on version- 24 sachets for £3-£4, used for dd1 and she never really suffered!! Apart from a little bit of the runs...

You literally just pop in their mouth every two hours.. and you can't overdose or cause any harm!!

Worth a try!
And with the cold, try a cotton bud with a little eucalyptus behind a warm radiator or in a bowl of hot water in his room!! Just a couple of drops are fine....

Hope this helps!!

Thank you twolittleducks.
Ds slept well till 8.30am, just crying in his sleep a few times. He has eaten 3 spoons of porridge, one finger of bread and one fork of beans tonight. He's drinking- not loads but at least a little. He had half a cup of milk before he went to bed at 6pm. He fell asleep on me (unknown before now) at 5pm.
He's now refusing any medicine, the cough syrup tastes vile and I think he's refusing the paracetamol because he's worried it's that.
Is this a normal reaction to illness? It's only really the second time he's been ill like this but he seems worse this time. Last time he was ill he was still breastfeeding and drank lots of water so I wasn't as concerned.
Do your children suffer like this? I guess the first-time-Mum-paranoia is still there!

Sorry to hear hes still not right. My ds always goes off his food when hes teething , and its usually the only time hell cuddle for long enough to fall asleep aswell. Just go with what he wants to eat. I always think that i dont always feel hungry when im not well, so it must be the same for him. Is he taking water? Aslong as he keeps his fluid up he should be ok, but if your worried you could always phone NHS direct.
Hope hes better soon

bramblina · 29/11/2006 21:20

Thanks for that. He is drinking, just not as much as usual. His nappy was not very wet this morning. I've just been shapooing vomit off his bedroom floor again. He's gone down again though, fine. He perked up a bit after he was sick. Fingers crossed he's on the recovery road and thanks again. x

My dd1 goes really off, she is all quiet, falls asleep just sitting there (very rarely happens also!), very hot etc. Also goes through the not eating phase, as long as they are drinking i wouldn't be too worried! Like ptmum said, when im ill i usually dont want anything, will be the same for your lo!

Have you tried the ibuprofen orange one?? It's the only one dd1 will take as all the others she dislikes!
I know you can get tixylix for kids and its blackcurrant flavour (i think!), this is usually a bit nicer for lo??

How long has he been unwell for?

LoveMyGirls · 29/11/2006 21:26

dd2 will only have nurofen strawberry flavour.

hope he is better soon, it is so hard when they are ill and teething. we had about a month where dd was up everynight in the end after giving her all we could inc olbas oil infants (on tissue out of reach) i just took her into bed with me for half hour of cuddles while i watched tv and then put her back down and she'd usually go back off, i also gave her milk if i thought she hadn't had much earlier in the evening.

bramblina · 29/11/2006 21:32

He became unwell on Sunday, thought it was a cold + infection thing but realised last night he's cutting 2 bottom teeth also. He's always fine with paracetamol, but since I started giving him the foul tasting cough mix he's refusing everything just incase! He's still asleep so here's hoping it's on it's way out. If not good tomorrow will have to phone dr's.
Thank you all. x

teeth are such a bugger!! i would try the homeopathic granules, found they were the only things that really helped!!

would say the cuddles idea is a good one as well, nothing like a lovely cuddle to feel a little better!!
