My dd is 20 month old and I had my first uti whilst pregnant.
Birth was lovely had an episiotomy but all ok, except I have had almost constant uti's since. I am feeling tired all the time and of course the antibloomingbiotics keep giving me thrush!!
I am still bfeeding so have only had cefalexin but I am getting desperate now.
Have also had ultrasound on kidneys and bladder which came back normal. Does anyone have any idea what else I can do GP doesnt seem to bothered and suggested I was depressed last time I saw him. I had to convince hime I am fine BUT P*SSed off with the infections pardon the punn.
Any suggestions gratefully recieved.

I used to get UTIs all the bloody time so I know how painful they can be.
At one point I was put on prophylactic trimethoprim which helped but I stopped taking it eventually because of the thrush it caused.

I find THE most important thing that I do to prevent it is passing urine immediately before and after sex. No lying cosy and nice for us. I almost jump out of bed and rush to the loo then I sort of actively try to pass urine. Not sure how I do this but I do! This has helped enormously though I still sometimes get problems.

If infections occur every time you have nookie, you need to take 1 antibiotic straight afterwards-this is called prophylactic management (I think)
At this level it shouldn't cause thrush, unless of course you are bonking 3x a day every daY!

You can also take a 6 month course of antibiotics, which may give you thrush, but should erradicate cystitis.

What worked for me eventually was 6 refloxology sessions, don't know how it worked bit it shifted it

I used to get UTIs all the time, especially after sex for years. I started taking one of those 1000mg vitamin C and zinc tablets every day (the big fizzy ones)for general infection-fighting boost. No problems since.

I think gp needs to refer you to a urologist. It really pisses ( no pun intended!) you off all the time, when it goes on and on. They are very fond of that little gem "all in the head" aren't they. I find it usually means they don't know what else to do....

Weeing after sex is really important but does rather spoil the moment....Take lots of cranberry tablets, very helpful GP recommened this.
Are you getting repeated bacterial infections, or is it just the symptoms without any infection?

Elliebean · 29/11/2006 11:32

Thanks everyone. I really thought it was just me!!
I will pop down to boots at lunchtime and stock up on complimentary tablets, I didnt know they existed and have got very sick of drinking cranberry juice!

Fizzbuzz how did you work out it was sex causing the infections?

Aimsmum was it a gp referral that got the camera thingy! My GP was trying to say he had done everything and suggested I get tested for STD'S!

Fizzbuzz we are not getting many "moments" at the moment if you see what I mean, but I will certainy try to get to the loo straight away.

I dont get any burning, just smelly wee and having to go often and when I get there not much happens! All the samples I have given have shown some bacteria. I feel better now I know about these additional treatments and I am going back to the GP with more confidence.
Thanks

That camera thingy is called a cystoscopy, and I had when when my GP referred me to urology dept of local hospital.

I knew it was related to sex because it always came on about 26 hours after doing it.It was like clockwork, also (and believe me I am a *** expert on this)if it comes on within 11-36 hours after intercourse, it is triggered by it.

Apparently they are producing a vaccine for it, but because men don't tend to suffer it like women, it has taken a long time in coming.

Ellibean, I had uti's for years. I really sympathise. Eventually (after endless antibiotics that only treat that infection & don't stop another & are not a good idea long-term) I was referred to a urologist. I ended up having an operation to widen my uretha (sound's horrible but it was under a local & recovery afterwards was quick). Basically, bacteria was travelling up and getting couldn't get back down. The infection was so bad I had half my bladder burnt away (sorry that sound's awful but can't think of medical term). My kidneys were always fine. This was 10 years ago and I have had no problems since, even after 3 pgs & copious amounts of sex . I wonder if yours could be something to do with the episotomy? Hassle your GP or ask to see another, don't be fobbed off with PND.

fizzbuzz · 29/11/2006 17:54

Ellibean, I know when I had ds and I had an episiotomy, going for a wee always felt different after it, and still does 12 years later.
It felt like the urethra had got smaller and the back and front of it were touching.

I know this sounds weird, but it definitely was different. You have lots of my sympathy, it is so wesring and depressing.

I used a great natural remedy called Ultrica or soemthing, wait I'm away to find it, cleared up very quickly

Elliebean · 04/12/2006 16:46

Thanks for all the info and support. I have a Dr's appt for Friday and I shall be asking for a referral at the very least.

Bathing in tea tree helps too.
