Would you pay for private mammogram?

Hi all.

I found a lump in my left breast about two months ago. Referred to clinic and had a CT scan. I was told it was normal breast tissue but they would see me again in a month. Second CT scan, again told normal breast tissue and discharged. Would you pay for further tests privately, like a mammogram? The lump is still there. Opinions appreciated, thank you x

Why a CT scan?

CosmicDespot · 07/09/2015 21:28

How old are you OP? Mammograms aren't much use in younger people. Was it definitely a ct scan, or could it have been ultrasound scans (which would be much more usual).

I am 40yrs and SORRY, it was ultrasound not CT!!! Idiot xx

I was 36 when I had my first mammogram.
We do a one stop clinic at the hospital. See the Dr, mammogram then ultrasound all in one visit. ( I work in radiology so knew mammographer doing my X-ray and the Dr doing my ultrasound..) it was debated over wether I was too young to have a mammogram done but decided to do it to be on safe side.

40 might well be a bit too young for a mammo to be useful - it's due to tissue density. Did they do any sort of biopsy or aspiration of the lump? Could they see the lump on the ultrasound?

If I were you, I'd go and discuss it all with your GP, because, although the breast clinic are obviously happy that you've nothing to worry about, you haven't been reassured. Perhaps a fuller discussion of your scan results and clinical examination would help. I wouldn't just spend money on an investigation which has a high chance of not proving or disproving anything for you.

It's horrible to be worrying about this Flowers

Thanks all. No biopsy or aspiration just reassurance that it was 'breast tissue' but I'm not reassured. Think I will go back to GP xx
