Tooth extraction - is this normal?

I had a lower molar extracted on Friday, it was badly broken and couldn't be saved.

It seemed to go ok and I have been taking normal painkillers. I looked at the clot today and it looks intact but is a kind of yellowish grey colour. I also have a mild to moderate toothache feeling still.

I'm guessing since I have a clot it's probably not dry socket but I'm worried it might be infected. I had abcesses and infections galore before the extraction.

Any experiences? I don't want to take time off and waste the dentists time if this is normal.

Sounds like dry socket, you need to go back to the dentist and get it dressed (instant pain relief ime) and antibiotics.

Having had it twice my dentist now gives me antibiotics automatically if having an extraction.

Bugger. I thought it would hurt more and no clot if I had dry socket? It's not terrible, just a bit nagging. And grim looking.

I'd better call the dentist then I suppose.

Thanks for your reply.

If you're not in pain that your painkillers aren't helping then don't go, give it time. The clots do go yellow and brown and grim. Dry socket is painful, very much so.

Well, it was starting to smell so I called them for advice and they wanted to see me.

There is no dry socket but a mild infection. The dentist packed it for me, said I shouldn't need antibiotics and that should sort it out.

Hopefully it will be all fine now, I'm just relieved it's all over and hopefully no more abcesses Smile
