Stuck on the toilet and have blood in my urine

LateBloomer414 · 04/09/2015 00:34

Please help me figure out what to do! I think I have a bladder or urinary tract infection but this is well beyond what I would have expected (never had one before). Started getting intense 'need a wee' feeling this evening until it was bedtime and now the sensation has kept me on the loo for over an hour. In that time my wee now has blood in it, started out light pink but getting darker. I took 2 paracetamol after checking NHS website but still having muscle spasms in my bladder and I can't get off the toilet. Planning to call GP first thing but what else can I do to ease stories so I can go to bed? Thank you for any help!

That sounds really bad! I've had them before but not with as much blood as it sounds like you have.

For now, drink lots and lots of water to help flush it out. If you have any, add about a teaspoon of bicarb of soda to a glass of water.

LateBloomer414 · 04/09/2015 00:42

Thanks Demented. I haven't heard of the bicarb solution, I will check it out (as soon as I leave the bathroom which feels like it might be never). What is it meant to do?

Also, some people swear drinking cranberry juice helps. I feel like it has helped me in the past, it might not have but there is certainly no harm in trying if you have any in.

ArgentinianMalbec · 04/09/2015 00:45

Late, if you're in that much pain can you call your out of hours service and get yourself to a doctor? Ours is 111. You'll probably need some antibiotics of there's that much blood. Flowers

SonceyD0g · 04/09/2015 00:46

Drink, drink and drink more. Water no juice or tea or coffee. Cranberry juice is great if you have any. Don't sit on the loo longer than you need too will make it worse. Hot water bottle will be comforting but drinking lots of water is the key to flush out the germs. You have my sympathy it is truly horrid. Gp as soon as you can take a urine sample and they will give you some antibiotics

EBearhug · 04/09/2015 00:47

Call NHS Direct now, if it's getting worse - don't wait till morning. (I called them a couple of weeks ago, and it meant I got an appointment first thing in the morning - they'd already contacted my GP, so they were expecting me to call, and I didn't have to argue about whether I really did need to see a GP that urgently - they just said, "Can you get here by 08:45?")

dementedDementor · 04/09/2015 00:47

I think it's supposed to help with the pain. It might be baking powder not bicarb, I always get those two mixed up! Let me Google it.

Salemthecat · 04/09/2015 00:51

You have my sympathies, they really are awful.

I agree with previous posters you should phone 111 as when I've had the same symptoms as you they sent to me to out of hours and gave me antibiotics.

Keep drinking water and, this is disgusting I know, but I found lying in a bath and just peeing was easier than sitting on the toilet. On the plus side the antibiotics kick in quickly.

www.livestrong.com/article/520078-baking-soda-water-for-urinary-tract-infections/

Baking soda and water may be able to help ease the symptoms of a UTI, including pain and burning during urination. Dr Laurie Steelsmith, author of "Natural Choices for Women's Health" indicates that drinking a blend of baking soda and water can help ease burning and reduce the frequent urges to urinate. Your baking soda mixture should contain 1 cup of cold water and 1 tsp. of baking soda. Thoroughly mix the baking soda and water together. Baking soda is an alkaline compound that can help to decrease the acidity of your urine. Acidic urine is what causes pain and burning during urination with a UTI.

It sounds like you're really suffering though. Does NHS direct still exist or something similar as I think you might need to give them a call.

LateBloomer414 · 04/09/2015 00:51

Thank you everyone for the replies! I am off the loo and have mixed half a tsp of bicarb into a small glass of water and am sipping it down. No cranberry juice in the house but will grab some tomorrow AM. Bearhug I'm going to see how this plays out for the next half hour or so but NHS direct is getting my call if the sensations haven't subsided any. It's not pain per se, just super uncomfortable.

Sorry cross posts! Ignore what I said about NHS direct, of course it's 111 now! Blush

dementedDementor · 04/09/2015 00:53

Or is nhs direct the same as 111? Ignore me...BlushBlush

LateBloomer414 · 04/09/2015 00:55

Demented I read the same article, hopefully it will work. Salem I was looking at my tub whilst on the loo thinking about it. But it's too cold and I'm a wimp!

NHS Direct is 111, yes, but I think it's not actually called NHS Direct now.

LateBloomer414 · 04/09/2015 01:04

Back on the loo. Thought I needed a no. 2 (sorry, tmi) but am now passing clots. Calling NHS....

I really feel for you Late. I remember having an awful one (my first actually) a couple of days before I was due to go abroad for a wedding. I managed to get to a walk in centre the day before we flew out and got antibiotics which kicked in quickly, but a side effect of the antibiotic was that I developed these hideous sores around my mouth! Since having that first uti I seem to have been more susceptible to them as well.

SonceyD0g · 04/09/2015 01:06

That's very painful. Keep getting the water down. Pints and pints of it

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 04/09/2015 01:06

I have suffered cystitis this acute before. I find a warm bath always helps - really soothes it. And bicarb of soda dissolved in water - taste beyond foul, but helps a lot. Plus lots of water.

dementedDementor · 04/09/2015 01:06

Oh latebloomer I hope everything is Ok Flowers

SonceyD0g · 04/09/2015 01:09

My worst was the one I developed on the morning of a 12 hour flight that afternoon. And we had loads of turbulence so unable to get to the loo....

INeedNewShoes · 04/09/2015 01:24

Poor you Late

Hope NHS phoneline are helpful. Do make sure you are seen sooner rather than later. Flowers

LateBloomer414 · 04/09/2015 02:42

Thanks everyone again for the advice. The 111 service had an out of hours Dr ring me and I just got back from hospital with a gigantic pack of antibiotics. I am feeling better but have resumed my residency in the loo. Dr said to just get it all out so I'm chugging water and hoping it flushes out my system quickly. I am so grateful for the NHS. And so grateful I'm not on an airplane. Sonsey I don't know how you got though that ordeal.
