Quick! You can give Calpol and Nurofen together can't you?

If not, shit, because I have done tonight. Gave them both (2.5ml Nurofen, 5ml Calpol) to dd (5.5 months) about 7pm because she's not well: temp, grizzly, hardly slept last night etc. Dr was supposed to come but didn't turn up so I've just got back from the out of hours doctor who says it's an ear infection, but I can't get the prescription filled until the morning. I don't particularly want to give her anything else tonight as she's just had another dose of Calpol but my mum's just worried me by saying "oh no, you definitely can't give them together, just alternately". Eeek. Too late to do anything about it but was I wrong? I'm sooooo tired, it was a bad night and a hard day at work and Dp and I are snapping at each other because we're knackered and I'm stressed about this now too. Reassurance anyone? TIA.

AFAIK, you can give them together, just most people give them alternately to prolong the effects. I could be wrong though, am sure someone else will advise soon!!

www, think you can - I've done it and hte girls are fine. It's such a small dose anyway am sure you shouldn't worry.

tamum · 10/05/2004 22:39

I've never done it absolutely simultaneously, but I definitely have about an hour apart, on doc's advice. I think it's pretty hard to overdo Nurofen, so I would think she'll be fine as long as you don't give her any more Calpol. Please try not to worry!

dogwalker · 10/05/2004 22:40

WWW - you can give together, however doc advises give calpol first, then nurofen after two hours, then calpol after two more hours (making the four hour gap) etc. also nurofen can upset the stomach so give a little to eat.

cuppy · 10/05/2004 22:41

I have been advised by docs in the past that you CAN give together, but as wobbly says most people do alternate. If you last gave them together at 7pm and dd's ok now(I mean hasnbt reacted), I'd take that as a good sign.hth

Don't worry you can give them together. In fact with my ds at that age that was the only thing that would get his temp. down. Don't worry. Nurofen lasts about 6 hours and calpol about 4 so people tend to alternate them to get longer action, but you can certainly give them together. If your dd wakes up during the night and only 4 hours has gone by you can give her a does of the calpol and then wait to give more nurofen til she wakes up again.

My doc tells me off if I forget to give them together.

Ds had a temperature of 100 the other day. I gave him Calpol but it went up to 104 within 4 hours. I phoned the doc and he said, give him Junior Nurofen and then come straight here. By the time I reached the surgery (15 mins later) his temp had dropped back down to 100.

www- glad you got the reassurance and hope you all managed to get some sleep and that dd is better this morning

Marina · 11/05/2004 09:09

Yes, do hope she is feeling better. Ear infections are absolutely horrible, hope this is strictly a one-off for her and you all. The paid work/ear combo is no fun, sending you lots of positive vibes www.
