Wisdom tooth extraction. How many days off?

I'm a very nervous dental patient, so I'm having my lower right wisdom tooth taken out under sedation on Thursday. I've got the day off on Friday & I have cover for work on Sunday, but for various reasons I can't take the day off on Saturday. My problem is that I speak for a living and I will need to talk throughout a 7 hour period. People are relying on me, so I really don't want to let them down, but am I deluded to think I can cope on Saturday?

My bathroom cabinet looks like a sweet shop with them all lined up. Trying to decide which are smallest so I don't have to open my mouth too wide to stuff them in!

had to dislocate my jaw This is a myth and never happens, usually trotted out as a scare story on here along with the old kneeling on the chest thing. You would not ever, ever, ever dislocate someone's jaw to remove a tooth. Likewise, you would never ever kneel on someone's chest. The mechanics of the situation just don't add up. Also it would be assault and potentially clinical negligence so, yeah.

When my patients have surgical extractions, I tell them that it's going to be very sore afterwards. It's expectation management, if you don't say it they will come back in to see you every day for two weeks expecting you to make it better. If you tell them it will be very sore and it is, no surprise. If it isn't then that's a bonus.

It is jaw surgery to remove an impacted wisdom tooth, if you had hip, knee or ankle surgery you would expect pain.

Hope you enjoyed your sedation OP, I had it for a foot op last year and gave it an "A*, would go again."

I might become one of your groupies mrsmorton. I had a lovely snooze afterwards and now I'm wide awake & working my way through your dental threads.

I have a jaw that dislocates pretty easily due to an old injury - he said it was easier for him to pop it out and keep it that way than for it to keep moving in and out.

But hey, what do I know through all that sedation!

What's with all the Hmm faces and 'I had no days off work' etc etc? You do realise that different people react differently to procedures, teeth may be harder to get out (technical term!), have different tollerences to drugs, I could go on. Bravo for being such brave soldiers and carrying on, but there is no weakness in needing a couple of days to recover. Plus your comments offer nothing to the thread.

OP, glad you got it all sorted and hope you heal quickly!

I've moved from soup to pasta. It looks hopeful for going back to work tomorrow, but I need to look suitably wan & pathetic to justify taking the day off to recover on Sunday. Thanks for all your posts.

Glad it went well. I had all four taken out under GA and all four were impacted. I looked like a hamster for a week afterwards and had 12 stitches in total. And the bloody tooth fairy never turned up either!!

Darn, I knew I should have asked for the tooth back!
