Anal skin tag surgery. Frightened. Any experience?

I'm due to have a large skin tag removed in October. It has been making me miserable for about a year. When it's swollen it feels like I'm sitting on a golf ball! It's large enough to pull the inside out sorry TMI. It's more worse than it isn't if that makes sense. But the surgeon told me how bad the recovery is and I'm really worried about it being so painful afterwards and maybe creating other problems. I already suffer with IBS so last thing I need is to make things worse. Has anyone had this op done? Thank you

Hi glad your op went well! I had mine done the 2nd Dec and I still have a slight lump! I definitely do think it’s getting smaller though. Having read this thread some people have had theirs for weeks and the full recovery time is 3 months. Did you get any stitches or not? I’m curious to know if that would have made a difference as I did get some. I’m trying not to panic too much yet as this thread seems to say it took it quite a while to go down! I have heard that silver oxide cream can help reduce swelling and restore skin I keep meaning to buy some. All the best, keep me updated

AnonymousX7 · 13/03/2022 21:33

Hi all, I’m back again on this thread. I got my referral letter when I first went to the doctor last year and was so excited looking forward to getting it done as it had been a burden for years. The doctor gave me some suggestions on how to manage my bowel movements which I took and didn’t end up hearing anything from the hospital for a good few months so I forgot about it. I also found I managed my bowel movements with my tags better through getting a routine of diet habits and using creams etc…

So when the time came for me to arrange my NHS consultation I decided to cancel because I was admittedly too scared at the prospect of surgery. I also had some fears about bleeding months after surgery, reopening wounds and actually end up with it worse than it is. Any hoo, months have gone by where I think I’m fine and controlling IBS, toileting etc. but recently I’ve had flare ups and have been struggling with the tags to get clean and I believe wiping as careful as I am is causing cuts/bleeding again with swelling. Really disheartening as I psyched myself up for it but as time went by I lost my nerve in a way and thought I could manage.

Could anyone answer my worries who has had this, have you experienced bleeding after they have been healed. Have these lumps/swelling gone? Have they come back? Also I was worrying about having to go private if I went the NHS and they refused, what price range would that be?

To get another referral would I need to go back to my GP and through that route again?

Anonymous29 · 16/04/2022 01:26

Hi! Can you tell me how large you tag was and whether you had stiches? I had spoken to 2 surgeons who both wanted to do in office with local anesthesia and NO sitches but the most recent surgeon I spoke to wants to do general anesthesia and use dissolvable stiches. He said he fids it heals better with stiches, but from all the posts I have read, healing seems to go much better without stiches and if just left open. Thanks so much!

AnonymousX7 · 17/04/2022 18:49

@Anonymous29 hi, I’m due to get mine done privately soon. I’m having general anaesthetic and no stitches to remove one large (to me, but surgeon says it is small) bit of excess skin. I do have a smaller bit on the opposite side but I’m not sure that is being removed… I was going to ask on the day as I’m paying a package price which means it’s for one or more skin tags under one operation but not sure it is possible and/or safe to remove both and have two open wounds down there. I originally spoke to the surgeon about the larger one but I assumed if he deems safe he would sort the other but I’m not sure.

I was told by my surgeon that general is more dignifying as my legs will be up and surrounded by a team. Also, he told me that sometimes local anaesthetic can make that area swell up so it can be harder to dictate how much to take away. So they will inject local anaesthetic after, for pain purposes when I wake up to be more comfortable but operate under general. Also, no stitches is safer because less chance of infection I was told and better healing from the bottom of the wound up to create a smoother surface.

Belleangel22 · 18/04/2022 10:35

Hi guys from my research I genuinely think the lump left over is actually a ‘hypertrophic’ scar. I’m applying some good scar cream and hoping that will make a difference

AnonymousX7 · 21/04/2022 08:50

Hi, just seeing if anyone is still in this threat who can advise me on cleaning the wounds after surgery? So far no pain but really have avoided looking or going near that area since 24 hours ago when I got it done. Do people just go in regular showers and wash the area off? I haven’t had a BM yet so dreading that and how I’d go about cleaning that with the blood! Any advice would be hugely appreciated!

lesgalettes · 21/04/2022 09:12

When I had this done I had normal showers every day with unscented shower gel. I also bought a sitz bath which fitted over the toilet seat and I used this after a BM to wash myself. I bought a pile of cheap flannels and used a clean one each time to dry myself. Once the wound was more healed up then I used water wipes after a BM.

AnonymousX7 · 21/04/2022 13:28

@lesgalettes thank you for your response! I currently have no paint and I’m just post 24 hours, been trying to avoid the codeine I’ve been given but will be taking paracetamol.

I’ve also only had a fruit smoothie and a fibre bar, making sure to stick to plenty of water but was going to wait until my first bowel movement to see how it is to determine whether I will opt for laxatives.

I’ve got a Sitz bath arriving today too, just very scared of cleaning it when I shower later and making it actively bleed again! I haven’t looked yet as I feel looking will just make me panic so I’ve kept a pad on and been taking things steady.

lesgalettes · 21/04/2022 13:56

Yes maybe best not to look yet! It probably feels worse than it looks though. I really wouldn't worry about washing it. Maybe your first few showers just gently rinse over the area without being too rigorous with lots of soap.

I didn't take laxatives but did eat lots of dried fruit, drank lots of water and also used Movicol sachets for a couple of weeks.

AnonymousX7 · 21/04/2022 14:01

@lesgalettes thank you so much, been out of my mind worrying with the bleeding and cleaning and stuff. How long did yours take to heal would you say? And did it eventually look normal? I think the worst part so far for me has been the general anaesthetic recovery I had awful sleep from it and still feel out of it.

No pain yet, not took any painkillers but plan to start with paracetamol later and try avoid codeine/ibuprofen to keep my bowels soft. Still waiting for my first BM, pretty scared for it but I’ll probably just hop in the shower after and rinse the area then pat dry rather than wiping. I’ve just been on water, fibre bars and fruit smoothies so far, trying to eat enough fibre so I don’t have to use the laxative religiously but I’ll get a better idea when I do have my first BM I suppose.

lesgalettes · 21/04/2022 14:09

I'm not a doctor, but maybe I'd advise to start eating more normally so that your body and bowels start working normally.

It did take a while for mine to heal up, probably 2-3 weeks to feel more comfortable, and then a couple of months before completely healed up. I had it done over a year ago and it's been fine - still doesn't look perfect down there, but better than before the op!

AnonymousX7 · 21/04/2022 14:21

@lesgalettes yeah I’m hopefully going to get some soup and sandwiches to eat soon, I’ve just found my appetite has been gone since the anaesthetic. I feel so lethargic!

That’s good to hear! I had quite a lot of excess skin to the top and then more of an outward tag at the bottom which the surgeon said he removed for me. Was a pain to keep clean, would tend to bleed too and quite embarrassing!

AnonymousX7 · 21/04/2022 17:15

Just had my first bowel movement, and oh my did that hurt. Lots of blood came out too. Not sure whether my BM was finished but didn’t want to force it and put pressure on my wounds, I’ve started with my laxative so just going to let them come naturally. I’ve also been in the shower after, dapped with a wet wipe, bathed in some salt water and dried so I hope that’s helped. Sore now!

ReeseyRoo · 29/04/2022 13:17

I just wanted to hop on and share my experience, as I’ve been following this forum so closely. I had AST surgery 3 days ago (April 26), under GA. I had two ASTs, resulting from hemorrhoids during pregnancy. My experience has been up and down so far. I had a ton of pain the day after surgery, and that night I had a decent sleep - they had done local anaesthetic and gave me IV ibuprofen, so it lasted a while. I was prescribed morphine, but didn’t want to take it for fear of consitpation, so the next day I relied on Acetaminophen & Ibuprofen. I was basically laid out on the couch all day that day. I had a couple sitz baths throughout the day to help ease pain. That night was the worst night. I had spasms in my bum every 15 mins or so keeping me up. I realized last night that all I needed was a nice warm sitz bath to help relax the sphincter. So I did that last night and had the best sleep! I set an alarm to take my meds, and slept through to the morning. This whole time I was extremely worried about having my first BM. I’ve been eating fibrous foods, and taking a stool softener daily, but still feared it ripping me open. Today, day 3 post op, I had my first poop, and it just slid out of me without pain or bleeding!!! I think because I didn’t eat all that much the last few days, and what I did was fibrous (berries galore) or water filled (cucumbers), and because I drank a ton of water, I was able to just pass it without any pain! So I just wanted to share a positive first BM story! I do have pain from the surgery, but not from my first poop. I was so fearful of ripping stitches and such, so I’m really happy it went well! I’ll keep you all posted about healing. I’m still sooo swollen and it’s painful, so it’s a long road to recovery, but I’m super thankful to have an easy poop. Haha

AnonymousX7 · 29/04/2022 23:18

Just to add to this, as this thread has been so helpful to me addressing my issue and getting it done.

I suffered from a skin tag around 6 o’clock area that came out quite a bit and quite a bit of what my surgeon called excess tissue at the top of my bottom from constipation as a child and IBS issues. I had no stitches, general anaesthetic and 2 open wounds. Anyways I’m 2 week post op and wanted to share my experience.

I went down to surgery on the day, had general anaesthetic and fell asleep then next thing I know I’m waking up in the recovery ward. Then went out of recovery back to my room and had some bleeding with a pad they had put on for me and something similar to greasy gauze to stop my wounds sticking to anything but that fell out as soon as I went for the loo. I was panicky as there was blood coming from my bottom but had no pain and couldn’t feel anything as he injected local anaesthetic and I think they gave me morphine? Anyways, I went home later that day and felt tired so I just ended up laying on the sofa and then went to bed.

I woke up the next day, no real pain but more awareness of the area. I made sure to stay on top of my pain meds, I stuck to paracetamol and ibuprofen. Didn’t need anything stronger. When it came to needing my first BM I struggled to get it out and it hurt like hell! A real stinging pain and I must’ve been constipated slightly from the medicine they gave me so it was hard. Also was worried on how to clean myself properly after but I established a routine.

Anyways, I was given Lactulose and it did make my stools easy to pass and fairly soft but I was still having big ones although I was only eating soups and smaller stuff etc. It gave me terrible wind and stomach pains so I switched to Movicol, 1 satchet a day and making sure I’m drinking atleast 2L water a day, with fruits and brown bread for more fibre.

The Movicol made my BM really soft so I’ve gone to half a satchet a day and lowering my fibre although looser stools are easier for me to pass. Going to the toilet still stings, if you’re like me who has had two sites cut and left open which was quite a bit and have gone slightly inside then it’s inevitable. It will sting when you go just breathe, try distract yourself with something. The pain is like if you’ve ever had a fissure but maybe more intense but dies down after if you soak in a warm bath. Kind of like a stinging cut or graze pain. So here are my top tips to recovering from this:

1: Track your Fibre intake if possible with a nutrition app so you know you are getting the right amount each day, I’m into fitness so I do this anyways but this has really helped me stay on track. Also track water intake. I stuck to liquid/soft foods for the first week as much as possible.

2: I’d say if you aren’t familiar with stool softener laxatives before the operation, maybe try them before so you aren’t switching things in recovery too much. I’m still trying to find a balance of them, I don’t think I exactly need them but they keep me reassured whilst healing that I won’t become constipated. And you don’t want that.

3: When going to the toilet I can’t suggest enough getting one of those leg stools to put you in squat position, these really help me pass stools without straining and I’ll be using these for life now they’re amazing!!!!

4: When cleaning after a BM, I have a portable bidet bottle that I fill with warm water and squirt the full bottle there. After that I have a sitz bath that I put over the toilet with warmish water and sit in that to soothe whilst I run a small proper bath that is slightly warmer and sit in that until it calms everything down. After that, I’ll turn the shower on and go in with the shower head to make sure everything’s clean. I have unscented, natural shower wash which I use on a separate loofah to clean my bottom and it works well, no irritation and then rinse. As others have said above, using a clean flannel to dry after too. I also do the shower routine every night and sometimes in the middle of the day give it a squirt with the bidet bottle to clean any blood/discharge.

5: I have only been having 1 BM a day at the same time in a morning so I make sure to take my paracetamol before then incase.

I looked at my bottom early on and haven’t had too much swelling except at the front where the bigger tag was. But even with the slight swelling, it’s way less than what I had before. I’m actually really pleased with how it looks, it looks fairly normal! I just have two open wounds now which are visible but I don’t expect them to heal up for a couple of months anyways due to how much tissue was removed and healing takes time. I do have a lump/still a tag like piece of skin at the 6 o’clock tag which is where the skin has been cut and( I think this will heal to the other side and stay a little raised tissue), not sure whether this is swelling or I’ll be left with a small like tag/bump but it’s way less than what I first suffered with so I’ll see how that goes. My surgeon did tell me it may look as if it’s still there due to swelling but it will go down and that he cut the tag down a V shape to make it safe. So either way, I’m happier than what it was before even if the bump stays. I don’t have much pain when I sit or lay down now really, sometimes it can be slightly uncomfortable so I stick to baggy underwear and track pants etc.

I found that my bleeding has mostly stopped after a week, only when I go for a bowel movement does it sometimes bleed but not much. I also got discharge which I was told was normal but to monitor for anything else that could be infection, I still wear a panty liner to be safe and found most of my discharge from the wound came at night in my sleep. I don’t have much discharge now just the occasional spot.

I do have a follow up appointment in a month or so, but for me so far this has been worth it. It’s a case of keeping stools soft, cleaning and making sure I’m doing what I can to make healing optimal. I’ve avoided wet wipes as I feel it will irritate things but do use the occasional one to pat it to make sure I’ve cleaned properly. I think if you’re considering having this done, be prepared to change your diet, and put your life on hold until you get better. Don’t be afraid to ask your surgeon any worries you may have.

Also, I’d say don’t expect for it to look perfect. Everyone’s body is different, heals different and reacts different and these things happen, so don’t be let down if you don’t get the perfect result but also be prepared and realistic with yourself about what you want to achieve out of it and discuss this with your consultant. I had quite a lot of excess tissue on my bottom from years of straining on the toilet and bad bowel habits, my surgeon said it was more than he originally thought too. It’s only now I’m starting to work on addressing my bowel habits, diet and healing so it isn’t just a quick fix, I think it prevent it in the future it is a lifestyle change.

hope this helps anyone if you’ve had this/having this or struggling with addressing it and deciding whether the op is worth it for you.

anon995 · 11/05/2022 11:31

Thanks for sharing your experience, hope you’re doing well and would love to know how things are getting on!

I recently turned down surgery after a sporadic conversation between me and the NHS since Spring 2019… they offered me surgery and maybe I should’ve considered myself fortunate in that, but I have a feeling the location and size of mine would make recovery especially nasty. I’ve got two going all along the sides of the actual ring (that I suspect go slightly inside as well), and most of the happier recoveries sound like they’re from people who’ve had them in the 6/12 o’clock positions. The doctors I spoke to all explained that the recovery is grim, they didn’t say it would be especially so in my case but… I dunno, I just figured.

That said, I’ve got no bowel issues and they are ultimately painless so long as I’m eating right. But there are obvious frustrations with hygiene, and… I’m terrified to date with them. I haven’t dated in years because I’m so embarrassed by them, I don’t know how to explain them to a partner. If I thought surgery would alleviate that I’d just bite the bullet and go with it, but the one thing I couldn’t stand is for them to get worse.

AnonymousX7 · 17/05/2022 07:39

@anon995 hi, I’m nearly 4 weeks post op and I’ve gotten lots better. It has taken a big lifestyle adjustment for me, eating more home cooked foods, making sure I get lots of fibre and way more water than I used to drink but I’m actually seeing the benefits of that not not just making my BM easier. Really helping me with my IBS too actually sticking. To whole meal bread, getting my fruits in etc.

i can’t specifically advise as mine were 12/6, however the excess tissue at the top actually came more around and wasn’t really a tag but tissue making it actually near impossible to see my hole and the bottom was more of a tag because it stuck out.

I’ve not done much looking down there maybe once since around 2 weeks post op as I know looking will just make me annoyed that I have open wounds. The excess tissue at the top is just a gash of open still and nothing else but where the bigger tag was at the bottom going to my lady bits there is still a lump thing there and the open excision next to it. I believe part of this to be swelling as after I go to the toilet I can feel it and it gets irritated/sensitive to touch to dry just that lump but I also don’t believe it will be flat which I’m coming to terms with because it looks sooooo much better than before. Years of embarrassment and issues cleaning causing bleeding to now being able to see and clean my actual hole with no blood surprisingly even with open excisions.

I think the op is worth it, you just really have to take recovery seriously because it isn’t just a small thing that area will always be irritated so it’s going to take months. That being said, I’m unsure of whether I’d want to go through it again not because of recovery but more so I hated coming around from general anaesthetic and had terrible night dreams and sweats after. I also hated the feeling of being laid in a hospital bed with basically a nappy on really debilitated me, as I’m usually fit and healthy so it was a huge shock to feel like that to me. I think of course it is your decision but I do think it’s worth it in the long run for the sake of your self confidence, easier hygiene making toilet time easier! I hope this helps but just remember these things are more common than you think, so you aren’t alone!

Sensisoul · 11/06/2022 16:43

hi all,
adding in to this thread as had an anal skin tag removed on monday. Felt fine after op on monday then rest of the week it has been up and down. ive been told to keep the wound dry and the whole bum area feels very dry & sore. it feels itchy & v sore. i’m keeping a bum photo diary just so i can check its not getting any worse.
really wish i could put on some cream like anusol but they have said no as that keeps wound moist. i am keeping it clean and having regular baths with no scent but today was my first day out- sitting in a car hurt as seatbelt keeping me bolt up right. it feels as if the bum hole / wound is getting tighter & it hurts. I am due to go to a gig next week but at this rate i don’t think i’ll be able to sit through it :( please say it gets easier than this.
i’m taking zapain and tramadol can’t take ibuprofen due to my stomach sensitive.
taking lactulose but i usually use glycerin suppositories.
when i am out i daren’t pass wind in case i crap myself 😮
passing wind at home feels good but still have a throbbing pain after 5 days
i do take a while to heal due to a genetic condition.

AnonymousX7 · 14/06/2022 18:40

@Sensisoul don’t worry! It does get easier! To be honest, I wasn’t in a great deal of pain just discomfort even immediately after the op. I kept up on paracetamol & max strength ibuprofen, kept on my stool softeners but also made sure to watch my diet, drinking more water. If anything, having the op has made me realise how better my IBS is managed with better diet.

i am probably around 2/3 month post op, I had my 6 week check up a couple of week back. My top wound has healed perfect but the bottom (closest to my vagina) has a lump which is like a tag but firm which I’ve been told is scar tissue as that wound still hasn’t healed and flares up. He said to give it 6 more weeks and it should go down but won’t be like completely flat which I understood. Which, as it was the larger tag and a more sensitive area I don’t expect to heal perfect or look perfect. But I’m so glad I’d got it done and it’s a heck of a lot better than it was before to clean and look at! I’m still cautious now with cleaning, I don’t wipe I use a portable bidet and dap with water based wipes. Clean with unscented wash etc. i don’t strain either which is what caused this, so my bowel movements as a whole have developed healthy habits.

I’ve been told to apply sudocrem to help heal, but not sure if you should give it time before trying this as I didn’t until my check up. I would try sit on something cold to try cool down my bottom when in discomfort just to ease swelling too. My best advice to you is hang in there, keep soft bowel movements and regular. Bathe after a bowel movement, try not to wipe as much to irritate the area. A squatty potty and portable bidet are great to have. I was at a point a few days after where I felt I regretted it because I didn’t realise how debilitating it could be but I’m happier now. So it will get better!

Sensisoul · 14/06/2022 18:44

Thank you so much anonymousx7 for the advice. really appreciate it.
thanks

Constipated38 · 24/06/2022 08:10

Hi all, glad I found this thread. I had surgery yesterday to remove a couple of skin tags and band some haemoroids. I first had surgery 3-4 years ago but they didn't remove the haemaroids for some strange reason , only the skin tag. So I went back to doctors and got referred then covid happened so had to wait 3 years to be seen. The first surgery was painless and neat (just a tag removed and no stitches). However the tag quickly came back and had haemariod tissue protruding out my a-hole and some smaller ones inside which bled when going for a poo. My surgery yesterday I was in pain as soon as I woke up which I presume is due to the banding. I noticed some stitches on some of it but there's things hanging out my bum hole right now that weren't there before, it looks a right mess like worse than before and it looks like the skin tag is still there but I'm hoping it's just swelling and my ahole looks gapey, its usually very tight. I was hoping to have them surgically removed but the surgeon insisted it'd be far more painful than banding, not sure about that as I'm in alot of pain now, but I took his word. Everything was done economically on NHS this time I had no private room and they didn't even bother to do an enema even though I knew there was a poo there but I have constipation for many years. (I eat all the recommended things for many years and they don't have the effect at all maybe my body is just so used to that diet. I also drink water all day long. The only thing that helps is vigorous exercise like running. Anyhow that poo is still sat there from 2 days ago, I had the urge to go after the op but I couldn't get it to move and I'm scared to push to hard. Its uncomfortable. I have had paracetamol and ibuprofen as I need I need both and may have cooodomol tonight if its bad. I haven't got any time off work except 1 day annual leave yesterday having the op, but I am working from home today and hopefully I will be able to bear sitting in a chair all day on Monday. After reading this post I wish I'd got a sitz bath, looked online and by the time they arrive it'll be too late. Does anyone know what shops sell them in the UK? Boots don't seem to.

Zulu32 · 24/06/2022 09:21

Hi all! I started following this thread years ago and completely forgot about it now I’ve had my surgery! So thought I’d share my experience!
I had mine surgically removed in 2019, after years of probing the doctor for it.
Anyways, the surgeon who did mine, I wasn’t fond of. She came in and basically said “it’s not guaranteed that I can remove them all”, low and behold, she didn’t 🥺.
Anyways, surgery went well, I had a bit of bleeding through the night and slept on puppy pads.
When I went to the toilet, I used water wipes to gently dab at my bottom and wipe the surrounding areas that weren’t sore. I then hoped in the shower and gave myself a proper water wash. That helped keep me clean. I remember checking the aftermath and it was so swollen and blue/purple, that I thought she had made it worse! I didn’t need anytime off work and I fly for a living and on my feet all day!
I can’t remember the exact healing time but it was probably a few months before it felt “normal”. I don’t regret having it done, I’m just annoyed that some are still there!
My sister had the same op before me and hers were all gone but now, some have come back!
Right pain in the arse (pardon the pun).
I’m going to look at going back to the doctors and getting it removed again. I can’t remember how many I had last time but there’s still a considerable amount still there. Especially as I’m still so embarrassed by it 🥺
Hope that helps you ladies

Constipated38 · 24/06/2022 09:25

OK so managed to get out a hard poo and one of the internal bands has popped out already. How annoying.

Sensisoul · 24/06/2022 09:46

hi constipated38
its been 2 weeks or so since my surgery. i have found the following things to help: germoloid suppositiries with local anaesthetic in- this helped to soothe me after a bowel movement. reducing my dose from 2 x 10ml lactulose dose to a 10ml dose,
some prescribed cream from my gp with a local anaesthetic in.
i called the hospital as i kept getting a throbbing pain even 9 days after surgery- and they said they removed anal skin tag but found internal piles- which was news to me as noone after surgery did give me any knowledge about how op had gone, what they had done and what to expect after surgery. i’m gutted they didn’t remove the internal piles too while they were there. when they discharged me they gave me a leaflet on fibroids & polyps removed from ovaries not anything referring to the rectum 😬
i find i have alternate days of pain- if i don’t pass a bm then i’m pretty good all day- if i do then its not so much it hurts at the time but afterwards it throbs.
So my recovery has been mixed & its probable still early days for me.

Hope things get easier for you in your recovery. do you think a gp appt would help?

Constipated38 · 24/06/2022 18:26

Hi Sensisoul. Thankyou for the tips. I don't think GP will help to be honest. My a-hole looks absolutely butchered. At the moment i am regretting the surgery as I don't think the surgeon has done a good job at all. Its a complete mess. It looks like half of the larger skin tag has been removed and there's a big gaping hole with a vein poking out and some lumps some of which look like jagged lumps of skin tag not removed and some new ones. Then there's 2 smaller skin tags that we agreed he'd removed and he's not touched them. Plus ive already lost one of the bands this morning. Absolute disgrace. Bum is throbbing but I could tolerate this if I knew there was going to be an improvement. Had a shallow bath in Epsom salt this morning after pooping but it still stings. It sounds like your hospital wasn't great either. I don't understand why they don't do what you've agreed with them to do. Are they just being lazy? This is the second time this has happened. Its like they just don't want to remove the haemoroid which is main reason for going in!
