Heya all

Im 28 weeks pg, been up all night with horrendous toothache. Im not registered atadentist yet (we moved 200 miles to live here, having trouble finding one!)

Now my nearest emergency dentist is 40 miles away. DP is stuck at work, it closes at half 3 (same time i have to pick ds up from school)

I know if you are going to the dentist your suppose to take someone with you. But Im in agony (not to mention terrified of the place) but I need to do something. What are they likely to do? Will they do anything at all if Im alone?

i hate DP's work, there are already 2 people off so they wont let him come home. Ive been crying with the pain since 7am this morning

I've never taken someone to the dentist with me.

I had awful toothache when I was about 7 months pregnant and was seen (on my own).

Goodness me jump in a cab immediately!

have you checked your nearest hospital they sometimes have emergency dental clinics. Can't you just register with your nearest one for today? You can always change again.

I can't remember exactly what I had ( 3 years ago now) but I had an infection that needed some drilling. Had anti-biotics to take afterwards and some sort of painkiller (not ibruprofen based as there is the possiblility that could start labour).

You will be able to have the pain lessened.

I had fillings and stuff done when I was pregnant last time and my current dentist is saying there's no reason why I shouldn't have the dental implants I need done whilst pregnant. That's quite a dental op, so I can't see why whatever you need to have done, wouldn't be. The local anaesthesia they give you is safe in pregnancy.

Also, some regular dentists offer emergency treatement for people not registered with them, so go on NHS direct and ring around your nearest ones.

I think there's some new thing with NHS dentists, that they don't have to have patients registered to treat them as that's not how they get paid any more. see here Should be easier for you to find treatment under this system.

thanks all

i have an appt at cardiff this afternoon at 1-30pm, Im a total mess, shaking already how silly. My local ones are all full and dont take nhs patients anyway.

Not sure what they will do seen as i have to drive myself

The only reason you wouldn't be able to drive home is if you were sedated. They won't sedate you if you're driving so it's fine. Sedation is very rarely used anyway, it's only for operations and stuff. I have driven my scooter to and from appts for fillings.

If you're already shakey and panicy about having treatment then the adrenaline based local anaesthetic might not be great for you. I'm not nervous, but I find that local makes my heart race and makes me feel nervous when I'm not.

There is another local they can give you. They need to leave it for longer to make it work, but there are no side effects. Might be worth thinking about if you're a nervous patient anyway.

Fingers crossed they can help you.

if you have an infection they will just give you a painkiller and antibiotics.

They won't start any treatment until the infection is clear.

HTH.

(I've never taken anyone to the dentist either)

julezboo · 27/11/2006 11:18

i had a tooth pulled out recently, im also pg so can really sympathise. clove oil is supposed to be really good for toothache, tho i didnt get round to buying any so cant tell you for certain. might be worth a try (ask pharmacist if its safe 1st, am assuming it is but you never know)

julezboo · 27/11/2006 19:50

I did it!! I braved the dentist by myself! I had a filling and the pain was doubled by awisdom tooth coming through!

Im so glad I went and now Im pain free
