I hope this link works. Discussion this week re the typical experience of having a coil fitted. Not terribly helpful as two quite different views. Interesting comment re the NHS line on anaesthetic injection.

Link not working for me Sad

Not working for me either but sounds interesting.

I had to be really forceful with my GP to get him to refer me to a gynae specialist rather than just sending me to the Family Planning Clinic. He told me that the NHS will never pay for a coil to be fitted under anaesthesia.

When I eventually saw the Gynae consultant and told her my medical history she told me that there was no way she would attempt to insert a coil without giving me a general anaesthetic and booked me into the day surgery unit to have it done within a month.

try again!

Sorry, this any better? Need to scroll down to the "Contraceptive coil" link.

Thanks that was interesting. I had no idea about the local anaesthetic injection - wonder why I was only offered a general anaesthetic.

I had my first coil fitted 10 years ago , and my second 5 years ago as a treatment for endometriosis and was advised that as I've never had a baby I had to have it inserted under general anaesthetic.

My private healthcare covered it then but when I went back for my third coil they said my policy no longer covered the procedure.

That's when I had to beg my GP to refer me to a specialist.

I had a failed attempt at having a coil fitted as emergency contraception (over 20 years ago now!). Horrible experience. I have an appt re getting Mirena fitted and am going to ask about local anaesthetic.

I appreciate there could be good reasons for a GA but yes, you would think they would discuss a local injection first.
