Breast clinic - when will I know if there is a problem?

I'm going to the breast clinic on Monday. My GP found thickened tissue and a small lump in my breast, so I've been referred.

I'm just wondering, will I find out on the day if it is cancer, or will I need to wait? I've found waiting for the appointment stressful enough, I just want to know either way.

Also, how long do appointments take usually? My dd is still ebf. Dh is going to sit in the hospital cafe with her while I'm in the appointment. I don't know what else I can do?

I found out on the day, but I had cancer in both breasts and I think it was pretty unequivocal! My colleague also found out that she didn't have a problem on the same day.
My daughter was eight weeks old and end too, I didn't have DH with me, but the hospital staff helped me out. Good luck.

Think it all took about 4 hours - chat, scan, mammogram and biopsies.

Normally you find out on the same day. They keep you there, doing as many tests as necessary, till they've decided.

Thanks everyone, I'm glad it sounds like I should know either way on the day.

Do you think they would mind if I have dd with me? I would rather have dh with me than in the cafe, but I wasn't sure if they would allow it. A friend is looking after my other dd.

Also, this might sound odd, but dh read something about the breasts needing to be empty of milk - does anyone know if this is true? So scared about all this.

No idea dinner - mine certainly weren't as DD was still feeding every 5 minutes!

I was seen one wee, told that it "looked suspicious" but had to wait until the next week for final results/diagnosis. In the intervening time the whole team could discuss my case and formulate a treatment plan.
Of course, if you are among the 90% who definitely don't have BC you would be told immediately.

I also got my results on the same day. DH and DD were with me, she was five months at the time.

Good luck Flowers

I was told on the day, after mammogram, that they were 95% certain it was not ominous(thickened tissue) but waited 4 weeks for follow up scan, which found three benign cysts, aspirated there and then
they will be fine with Dh and Dd being there

Good luck

WildStallions · 20/08/2015 21:58

Most of the day will be spent in the waiting room and it'll be fine to have DD there. She obv won't come in to the mammogram but that doesn't take long.
