ds (aged 8)sent home from school yesterday with temp, when i got home he was complaining of sore throat (looked with torch and saw white blobs at back of throat)and had mild rash on trunk,

today rash was more red , took to dr who said his glands were swollen (throat, back of neck, under arms) and that rash was scarletina - have been given antibiotics

just asking if anyone else has any advice, am also worried about chance of passing it on to dd who has just turned one

My ds1 had this really badly when he was 5ish then again several times in the following years. Camomile helps with the rash especially around the groin and really sore areas. Something like oilatum in the bath helps with the skin peeling. The antibiotics are really important because this is potentially a more serious illness. DS2 only ever got it mildly and not at all the first time - your DD is probably still covered by natural immunity. Don't worry - he will be fine in a couple of days.

Sorry to hear this and hope ds is soon on the road to recovery. I can't help you on the risk of cross infection but just keep an eye on him and if his symptoms don't clear up as the GP has suggested take him straight back. Scarlatina sometimes masks other things. Watch his temp. I'm sure the antibiotics will soon improve things.

Ds and dd had scarlet fever last year when they were 8 and 2
Did the doctor do a throat swab to confirm it? We were told he had to as it is a certifiable disease (or something like that)....so he had to report it.
Ds had it the worst ...the doctor missed it in him and then he passed it on to dd (2) and the doctor then recognised it in her and swabbed. By then, ds's hands and feet were peeling and as the symptoms were the same we knew he'd had it too. He'd also had the strawberry tongue.
Your son should pick up really quickly now that he is on antibiotics. Sorry...i can't tell you how likely it is that your daughter gets it or not.
Good luck anyway...hope your boy feels better soon and hope your lo escapes it

ds had a suspected case of this.

Those antibiotics (can't remember their name - but we had a 14 day course that had to be taken 4 times a day on an empty stomach!) seem to unsettle the tummy so keep an eye out for that.

I have no idea what the chances of passing it on to dd but I do know that no-one else in our family got it.

As LisaHy said, if his skin gets very dry and starts peeling, make sure it's moisturised so it minimises any discomfort to him.

could i just ask how long other peoples antibiotics were for - foxinsocks mentioned 14 days but the prescription my ds has been given is for 5 days and as lisahy says its important to complete the course so it doesnt develop into something worse

just asking as i took him to an out of hours surgery (as it was sat and our dr not open) and dr was really nice and seemed thorough but was obviously not our own dr and was a little on the elderly side (not being rude)

I don't know if my ds's age makes a difference - he was only just 4 when he got it so it may be that he had a different type (as opposed to an 8 yr old iyswim)

Troutpout · 25/11/2006 20:48

Not sure exactly ...but i know it was more than a week because we had a weeks worth plus we had some which came as dry powder which we had to mix up ourselves once we'd used up the weeks worth. (as it wouldn't keep)
Maybe 10 day's worth ..i'm guessing

My Ds had this when he was 2. cant remember the name of his antibiotics, but they were only a course of 5 - 7 days if I remember correctly.
He felt much better within a day of taking them though.
Hope your little one feels better soon.

ds had it at almost 5 but dd who was not yet 1 1/2 didn't get it. Your dd is more likely to just get a throat infection from the same infection as scarlet fever is a complication of Strep throat but not normally on the first exposure to it. ds had about 5-7 days worth of ab's and wasn't contagious after 24 hrs. We delayed a skiing holiday by a day and the suncreen/lipsalve really helped so his skin didn't peel as feared. He should feel better quite quickly on the ab's.

thanks for all your replies, feel better hearing your real stories rather than just medical info from the internet
