Horrible stomach bug-how long do they last?

I am feeling very very sorry for myself as I've got a nasty dose of the squits.I've had it since Thursday & it doesn't seem to be getting any better.

I am taking a generic form of Immodium, which helps a little bit,but still feel grim & spending most of my time on the loo.

My stomach is a bit unpredictable & I often get a one off bout of diaorrhea, but nothing like this. How long do I leave it until I go to the Drs?I probably sound a complete wuss, but I can't remember the last time I felt so bad.
Many thanks for any advice.

DTD(5) & DP had it for 1/2 day. DD3 (7m)had it for 13 days.

I sympathesise I hope that it clears up sooner rather than later for you.

Scootergirl · 25/11/2006 20:15

When DD had dreadful squirty tummy, someone recommended feeding her lots of live yogurt and those funny drinks with good bacteria in them and I have to say it worked like a charm. Pineapple juice can apparently also help soothe a squitty tum. Big sympathy to you though and hope you feel better soon xx

expatinscotland · 25/11/2006 20:17

DD1, 3.4, now has it.

It's a matter of time before DD2, 11 months old, has it.

Guess it's just par for the course this time of year.

Scootergirl · 25/11/2006 20:18

Repeat after me... this too will pass, this too will pass... DS has been throwing up on me all day so have much sympathy for you two

beansprout · 25/11/2006 20:29

We've had the same here this week. Ended up in hospital with ds on Thursday, only to come home and for me to start vomming for England. Poor ds (2) was very freaked out. Better now though - hope you are soon

Scootergirl · 25/11/2006 20:32

He's not been sick for ... oohh.. an hour now. I, however, smell like nobody's business from a day of being puked on and not being able to put him down long enough to get changed! At least I'm not the one chucking up, I suppose!

foxinsocks · 25/11/2006 20:33

how awful for you all

Expat - your dd has really been through it recently poor thing!

expatinscotland · 25/11/2006 20:34

I'm not surprised, fox, b/c it's her first year of nursery school.

foxinsocks · 25/11/2006 20:36

aaah yes, had forgotten that joy. It's tiring though isn't it (not only for her but you aswell) - sickness after sickness.

Scootergirl · 25/11/2006 20:37

As someone who's DD starts pre-school in January, please say it's not so... [pleading face here]

expatinscotland · 25/11/2006 20:38

That's how it's shaping up.

Has to happen, though.

She's just miserable and stroppy.

She only went to nursery on Monday last week and it's not looking good for next week.

Can't send her w/the D&V bug.

My SIL has a Yr 2 and Yr 3 boy and she says it's bad for the eldest the first year of nursery and Yr 1.

Then it gets better.

The younger one will generally catch everything from the elder one and not have such a bad time.

Thanks for the commiserations & advice.I hope I haven't got the 13 day version as I don't have access to a loo at work & am self employed so don't get sick pay!

All of you with puking/squitting children have my utmost sympathy.I was feeling sorry for myself because dd2 is ultra clingy ATM & won't let me out of her sight. It would be infinately worse if both the girls had it too.

I have eaten a probiotic yogurt thingy & will buy some pinmeapple juice tomorrow,(as well as more loo roll)!

My ds has elder siblings to pass stuff on expat and he still never managed to do a full week at nursery due to illness, it's awful isn't it.

Mirage · 27/11/2006 18:57

Oh crap-literally.DD2 has it now & I've still got it too.

There's a school of thought which says that Yakult,Actimel and all those yogurt drinks don't work too well because the stomach acid destroys them before they reach the gut. I've found acidopholus tablets (same thing but stronger) work well. You can get them in health food shops. Holland and Barrett have strawberry flavoured ones which you can give to children.
