Labyrinthitis - antibiotics?

Been told I have this and was given antibiotics as well as an antihistamine. I hadn't really heard of it so I googled, but it seems that ABs aren't usually given for this as it's usually viral.

So should I not take them? I really don't want to take ABs if they aren't necessary, I'm prone to chest infections so have them a lot as it is, and tend to get side effects from amoxycillin.

Off to bed now but thought I'd post now before I forget! Thanks

I had this earlier in the year. I didn't have Any Antibiotics- only some sort of sea sickness equivalent tablets. Take it easy it's tough going gettin through it. Was only when I was better I realised how ill I was

I've had labrynthitis twice and never had AB's. The last time I was given some sickness medication but was told to only take the when it was really bad as too much can actually make the symptoms worse and prolong them also.

I've had labyrinthitis approx 8times and never been given Abs however an Australian colleague was astounded by this as she was always given abs when in Australia and she was back on her feet a lot quicker.

Hmm, that's really bizarre! GP didn't say anything to suggest he thought it was bacterial, so maybe it was just precautionary Confused there does seem to be a big discrepancy between doctors, some hand ABs out like sweets and some hate to prescribe them at all! Wink

I think I'll leave it for now then. I'm managing ok at the moment (I have other illnesses that can make me very dizzy anyway, so in one way this isn't actually so bad, it's just 'different' which is why I went to the GP) so I'll just take the antihistamines starting tomorrow. Thankfully I'm not actually being sick either.

And now I really am going to bed. Thanks for the speedy replies Thanks

I have had labyrinthitis 3 times, first no antibiotics, second time given IV ABs in hospital and 3rd time none. The AB made no difference and it ran it's course just the same. The Dr in hospital gave them just to cover all bases as I was so sick, just on the off chance it was caused by bacteria. Nothing helped that much until I got vestibular physio in hospital during 3rd case. I hope you feel better soon as it's horrible.Flowers
