Should your knee cap move from side to side ??

Following on from my thread about dd1 and her knees. I had a good poke and prod of them last night and her knee cap on her right knee can be moved from side to side alot, seems really loose if that is possible.

Have since been chacking my knees dd2's knees and my mum checked hers and although they do seem to move a bit, they don't move anywhere near as much as dd1's.

Nutcracker I think it's normal... I used to do it all the time to freak my ~Mum out when I was little!!

tissy · 23/11/2006 14:25

keecaps can move a lot, but they shouldn't fall over the side of the knee, IYSWIM

tissy · 23/11/2006 14:26

kneecaps

meowmix · 23/11/2006 14:26

mine used to do that - can be a problem if they slip while she's running otherwise its just tendons/muscles growing or something. Stopped when I was about 18 I think, but might just be that I had other things to think about by then!

nutcracker · 23/11/2006 14:26

LOL

Ok, I have to take her to the docs to get them checked anyway as they are causing her pain so i will mention it, but just wanted to check here first to stop me looking like a complete loon.

I don't think it goes right over to one side, just seems very loose compared to her other knee and anyone elses i've felt lol.

She complained of pain in it before even getting out of bed this morning.

How old is she? I had problems with mine hurting when I ran too (still do with things like running up the stairs) It was a thing called............. actually I'll just look it up because I have no idea how to spell it!! Apparently sometimes the cartelidge (can't spell that either!) can be soft instead of firm - quite common....

This

meowmix · 23/11/2006 14:30

actually now I think back I seem to remember physio exercises that were designed to strengthen something (presume muscles if exercises?). leg bending while seated or something.

zephyrcat · 23/11/2006 14:32

I had to do those too meow

Have just read that article zeph and alot of her symptoms do fit. It is always her knee caps that hurt and they do somtimes make her limp.

Also the other week I thought I could see her turning her right foot in slightly when she walked. My friend looked too and said it was very slight. I though it might have been her shoes tbh but am not so sure now. Will study her on the way home.

Her knees were clicky as a baby and they said it was loose cartalidge and would tighten up but they are still clicky.

I had painfull knees in my youth (and my knee caps do move side to side) although I'd be in agony doctor always put it down to growing pains.

My personal diagnosis is that I have less cartildge that normal people.

if I ever fall or bump my knees they swell and bruise like you wouldn't believe.

nutcracker · 23/11/2006 14:41

I don't think dd's knees briuse anymore than anyone elses but she does have very bony skinny knees (poor child).

Oh well, will try and get gp appointment for tommorow after school.

me too. The good news is that now I'm aged I can wear heels no problem and my knees look relatively normal [Meowmix rolls down trouser legs, knee inspection completed satisfactorily]

MascaraOHaraIncredibleSheHulk · 23/11/2006 14:58

snap meowmix!

meowmix · 23/11/2006 15:08

Mascara - I have vision of us simultaneously checking our knees for freak elements!

MascaraOHaraIncredibleSheHulk · 23/11/2006 16:32

I have to say, I really like my knees

LizP · 23/11/2006 20:46

Does she do dance or any sport that really builds up one set of muscles over another - I was told that was the cause of me have chondromalacia patella - lots of rowing and cycling (and wide hips so a big angle) my left knee cap used to move all over - looked gross so would tie a scarf round it so I couldn't see it. did heal up but still clicks now many (many) years later.

nutcracker · 23/11/2006 20:49

She does 45 minutes of ballet a week and has done for the past 6 years. Could that be a problem ?? Hope not she'd be devestated.

LizP · 27/11/2006 22:51

Well professional ballet dancers do have big thigh muscles - but don't think 45 mins a week would be enough!
