Anyone been sent to the hospital with vomiting toddler?

DS (21 months) has been vomiting infrequently for nearly 48 hours and is lethargic and not eating. The GP wants us to go to the hospital this evening if he is not better. I was not very worried until I heard this and am now in a bit of a panic. Has anyone else had this experience? What did they do in the hospital? Is he going to have to stay in?

I haven't had this but my dhs collegue has with her dd. Its usually because they are concerned about dehydration. The first time her dd went in they kept her in overnight but the second time they didn't as she insisted they put her on a drip earlier rather than later. Try not to worry too much - I sure its just a precaution

yes my dd1 had htis about the same age

i h ad to take her in, she got a drip overnight and then we got home, after she had eaten something and not vomited for a few hrs

i stayed with her in a fold down bed

the drip wasnt as bad as you probably imagine

it made a big difference, she was so lethargic and scared she let the dr put it in no bother

good luck

Yes.

They can keep your child from becoming too dehydrated - a real problem w/vomitting - and even give him something to stop the vomitting if necessary.

Try not to panic, but if your GP thinks it best, PLEASE follow her advice!

actually, they gave me a fold down bed but i cuddled in beside her

Amynnixmum is right it'll be because over dehydration concerns. Try not to worry, I know it's easy for me to say but even if he does have to stay in it will be because he needs to. I hope it doesn't come to a hospital admission and I hope he gets better soon

If thats the advice you have need given , you should go , they monitor them for dehydration and give them any medicine they need , you can stay with your child too, it wil be okay. My 11 month old many years ago got admitted for dehydration caused by gastro enteritis, it is amazing how quick they can deteriorate, don't worry though my ds was very ill but did not need a drip or anything , it was just a precaution so they can observe them. However make sure you take you childs favourite drinks in case you are allowed to give them and it might help .

thank you for your messages - i will take some overnight things just in case. He does seem to be perking up a bit now but not drinking or weeing so I think i would be happier to go in.

you will be okay just a bit tired tomorrow, is a pain to have to wait and see as then you stay anxious, but hope everyhting works out okay

This happened to both my older children when they were in reception. They had to have a drip to rehydrate them and then they recovered really quickly. As long as you are there to hold their hand, hospital is far preferable to dehydration. The only tip I can give you is to give your toddler fluids on a teaspoon - tiny amounts frequently - otherwise it comes straight back up. Pack a flask, some snacks and a good book/mags in your overnight bag so you don't have to leave the bedside if you don't want to. All the very best.

Labradora · 22/11/2006 20:23

Sorry, another thing - the hospital will probably only put them on a drip after they have observed the volume of their fluid intake and output over night.

how is ds today

Nettee · 23/11/2006 19:32

we went in to hospital in the end at 01.00 this morning and are just home now. Temperature went up to 39.5 . No drip in the end but lots of trying to get ds to drink. He is much better than he was but I think there is still some recovering to do. hasn't vomited since we were admitted when he did quite a spectacular display for the doctor.

Thanks for all your supportive messages and advice. I was very glad of my overnight bag

Glad you child is home and feeling better

helenhismadwife · 24/11/2006 15:32

our dd had something like that when she was about 13 months it was so awful you feel so helpless. We managed to get fluids down her by giving her ice lollies just fruit ones so managed to escape her going on a drip.

Glad your DS is a bit better, you must be knackered hope you get some rest
