Dd and her painful clicky kness

Dd1 had had clicky kness since she was born. She had them checked twice as a baby, well when i say checked I mean the g.p moved them up and down and said it was loose cartalidge and would tighten up as she got older.

Anyhow they are still very clicky and she is 9 now and has started to complain of pain in them. She said it is like cramp, i think she means a bit like a toothache/headache pain though and that it hurts to walk and she has had it non stop since yesterday afternoon. She also said it kept her awake last night.

I have just rubbed a dot of ibuprofen gel into it and she said it is a bit better.

Any ideas ?

could it be arthritis? when did she last see the GP? Has she been referred anywhere?

nutcracker · 22/11/2006 16:25

She hasn't seen anyone about it since she was a baby and then it was only the g.p.

I will have to take her. Hadn't as yet as it's only recently they seem to be painful as well as clicky.

Nutty .. achey (as in flu-feeling achey) is a good description of arthritis pain .. I think maybe you should request a referral to a rheumatologist .. certainly it should be investigated further

ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory as well as pain relief so will help

nutcracker · 22/11/2006 16:27

Oh blimey, right ok.

I have the ibuprofen as Ds suffers with painful legs of a night, thankfuly though i think / hope that is completely different.

Nutcracker - I think you need to be very assertive and ask for a referral to see a rheumatologist. Do you know anyone who could give you advise on the best one to go to? You need someone sympathetic to peadiatrics.

cyrilsquirrel · 22/11/2006 16:30

clicking is not always a bad thing but it does mean there is movement in the joint and that basically the joint is more 'worn'

Ibufrofen will help.

Definately take her back. I hope you get it sorted.

Poor thing

nutcracker · 22/11/2006 16:37

No i don't Mrsdoolittle.

We are at a different practice now though so hopefully I may get more joy.

I hadn't thought it was that serious tbh as it doesn't stop her taking part in physical activity at all as far as I know. She does ballet and seems to have no problems then.

I was wondering if it was just the cold weather setting something off, but tbh i dunno what i'm talking about so I will take her to be checked out again. Will also hunt out her red baby book and see what was said at the time.

You must be firm Nutcracker, it's worth getting it checked out if it is worrying you and a specialist will be able to explain it to you.

Have just questioned her a bit more about it and she said that it is usually one knee (her right) but that sometimes it is both and the pain starts just under her knee but is worse actually where her knee is. She said it does keep her awake and today was making her limp.

She has a school concert tommorow (which she won't miss) so it will be friday before I can get her in to see g.p.

Her dad has osteoarthritis of the knees and spine, but that is wear and tear isn't it and not usually inherited ?

Have just poked and prodded her (as u do) and her right knee is painful to touch too.

cyrilsquirrel · 22/11/2006 16:50

it can have a genetic link. It runs in my family too

did he develop it at a young age?

nutcracker · 22/11/2006 16:55

Not sure tbh, I know he already had bad knees when I met him 10 years ago, and I know his dad also had/has it.

OP posts:
lostsoul · 22/11/2006 17:54

could it be patella chondritis?

nutcracker · 22/11/2006 18:14

Will look that up lostsoul as have never heard of it.

She is now saying she has the same pain in her elbow and that is also tender to touch.
