mooncup - what exactly is it?

At the risk of sounding silly - what is it exactly?, how does it work? Do you only need one? Ever? Having read the threads, it sounds great, having been a real nappy person, i'd like to continue the green bit. Any downsides at all?

Oops will tell you. She spent the best part of Saturday telling me all about them.

NotQuiteCockney · 21/11/2006 20:17

It's a small rubber cup you use instead of tampons. You only need one, ever.

I find inserting and rinsing and so on a bit gross, but not significantly so. If you can cope with real nappies, you'll live, I'm sure.

I do find them a lot more comfortable than tampons, though.

JackieNo · 21/11/2006 20:17

Here's the website . Also do a search - there have been a fair few threads on them.

Flum · 21/11/2006 20:17

a mingy cup for your mingey to colect yukky pools of menstrual flow.

wish you hadn't asked?

LittleMonkeysMum · 21/11/2006 20:31

I love my mooncup! Could not recommend them highly enough! If you can cope with the idea of one then the reality is fine!

thanks JackieNo, for the link - it was good to see what it looks like. I'm off to Boots tomorrow to get one, too keen to wait to order one from MN. Will keep you posted!

can't recommend them highly enough. be sure and get the right size, lambchop.

Tatties · 21/11/2006 22:12

Mooncups are fab. You won't look back!

iwouldloveadollypleaseSanta · 21/11/2006 22:17

oh it is the sizing information that grosses me out more than the actual mooncup idea !!

lambchop2 · 22/11/2006 14:22

my little branch of Boots doesn't stock them - dragged littlest dd out in the rain this morning to get one too - bother! Need a plan B

hi lambchop, you can order one online off their website

Kidstrack · 23/11/2006 13:39

i got mine from franny last week, and i'm looking forward to using it, but i'm concerned as it looks huge, maybe i should of ordered the smaller size, has anyone needed the smaller one after buying size A, think i might need size B

AitchTwoOh · 23/11/2006 17:21

it's not huge once you've folded it over, really. and i don't think there's a big difference in size between the two, as far as i'm aware. (also, just to be crude, if a mooncup's the bigges thing that's ever been up there - or come down there, if you had a vaginal delivery - then you really are in trouble. )

lambchop2 · 23/11/2006 19:22

just ordered one online, thanks all

OP posts:
Kidstrak · 23/11/2006 20:08

yes i know that but it still does seem big, i have only had one normal delivery the other was a c/s and i'm under 30 so i think i may need the smaller one, but i will see in a few days!

StrangeTown · 23/11/2006 22:59

What is it with this mooncup sizing?
Does something happen to your fanjo when you get to 30? Why do you suddenly start to need an XL? I have just turned 35 and I reckon I am just as firmly mimsied as ever. . It's nearly new fgs, hardly used, I don't think I could face having to ask for a BIG mooncup...

iwouldloveadollypleaseSanta · 23/11/2006 23:06

sorry but i think it gets baggy all by itself - a bit like everything else

LittleMonkeysMum · 24/11/2006 08:54

Lucky you ST, I'm 34 and I reckon mines's like a floppy old blamange iykwim. Fully expecting baby to just fall out!

AitchTwoOh · 24/11/2006 10:16

LOL at mimsy...'all mimsy were the borogroves' has just taken on a new meaning. thatnkyou for ruining Lewis Carroll for me, strangetown.

jessicaandrebeccasmummy · 24/11/2006 10:22

Right - you lot - tell me....

I am severely heavy when on - to the extent im changing a super plus tampon every hour or so.

Will a mooncup stay in longer without leaking?!

I am grossed out by it, but I cant afford 2 boxes of tampons a month!!!

AitchTwoOh · 24/11/2006 10:25

anecdotally, there seems to be some correlation between using one and your period lightening. the mooncups are actually designed with teeny holes in them, so that they will leak rather than fill up entirely, so you do get a warning when it's really full. but in my experience you just tip it out and give it a rinse every time you go to the loo, rahter than feel that dreaded 'uh-oh' and have to do teh penguin walk to the loo...

jessicaandrebeccasmummy · 24/11/2006 10:32

oooooh - the uh-oh penguin walk - i HATE IT!!

I think i might invest in one to TRY after xmas - too skint ot even contemplate one right now!

MammyM · 24/11/2006 10:37

That looks really good, I'm sure dh would appreciate not having all that 'stuff' in the bathroom! I'm getting one (when I get paid!)

StrangeTown · 27/11/2006 17:49

AitchTwo, sorry about the mimsy corruption - I wasn't aware of that for the Lewis Carrol connection? What exactly does that sentence mean??????
