Glandular fever in 3yr old?

Hello, would be grateful for any advice.
My ds (3.6) has been ill for a few months-fatigue, anxious, coughs & colds, various viruses, yet no-one seems to be able to get to the bottom of it.
I was recently told by the gp that they thought he could have diabetes; thankfully that wasn't so.

He is usually such a lively, confident and boisterous little boy but now all he wants to do is stay inside. He wakes before dawn every day and is exhausted by lunch time.
Somebody suggested glandular fever and I wondered if anyone has had any experience of this in a yound child? Would be really grateful for any feedback as we've been worried about ds for months now and I would really like to try and help him get through this and get back to normal.

Thanks

hi i haven't anything really constructive to add but i would go back to gp and get referral to paediatrician at your local children's hospital. you may have to see other gp's but keep fighting for it and soeone will send you to them x hth

Thanks fransmom, I am going to go back to GP today and ask them to a) do a complete blood test (am dreading this!) and b) refer us if he doesn't improve after this latest virus.
thanks x

Hi rabbit! Hope you had a good time ooop north.

There is someone on here whose 5 yr old had glandular fever. I can't remember who it is was (you may find my searching). You can ask for a blood test - don't know if they do children's blood tests here or whether you have to go up to the hosp for them

Must say, both mine went through phases where I never thought they were going to get better (I remember one 6 month period when dd had a stomach bug, then chest infection, then another stomach bug....). Has he recently started nursery for the first time or anything like that?

I give my kids Floradix if they have had a long bout of illness and although I haven't done it for a while, probiotics are good as well (esp if some of his viruses have been tummy ones).

You know your child best though and it may be a good idea to have a blood test done anyway to look for things like anaemia.

Hi Fox, we never went in the end, ds was too ill
I'll do another search as I didn't find much when I searched before I posted this message. I'm going to wait until this latest bout is over and the revisit the gp to have a "full and frank discussion"!

Hope your children are better-am sure I saw on another thread that they had croup.

thanks rabbit - sorry to hear about your trip

yes, they are much better. They both have now got chesty coughs (this is more problematic for dd because she is asthmatic) but they are on the mend. They are both v tired though from broken nights and school. I feel we all need a holiday already - still, only a couple more weeks of school left now.

If you go to the surgery that is on the road that begins with P (as in the P Road Surgery) then I found the best doctor for children's issues is by far and above the lady doctor whose initials are A P. She's a partner in the surgery but it is v hard to get an appointment with her. She has two children, similar age to mine, and is always v good at listening to concerns about their health!

here you are rabbit - it was lucy5

glandular fever

I think if you search on her name, you may find some other stuff on it.

Thanks again Fox. I'm going to have a read through that thread now.
Also, we're registered at the very same surgery so I will make an appointment with her; we've seen her in the past and I did feel very comfortable with her.

Hope the coughing doesn't keep you awake!
