Under active thyroid

I've got a very under active thyroid and 6 months after diagnosis and 175mcg of thyroxine a day I am still feeling pretty rubbish - want to sleep all the time and very achy although some days are better than others. Anyone else got any experience of this?

Get your blood tested again - you may need a higher dose. I'm on 200mcg a day, but it took a while to get to the right dose.

My mom has this and i know she had to try several different doses before she found the right one.

Hope you feel better soon.

If it is 6 months after diagnosis then you should definitely have another blood test - as willow says, the dosage may need to be increased (Most people will have their blood checked every 6 months once on a stable dosage, if still unstable then it should be more frequently).

I'm also on 200 mcg a day and my thyroid is now permanently under, after radioactive-iodine treatment, as during the course of 2 years it just wouldn't stay level.

Honeypie - Yes, I felt the same, though I was having regular blood tests and the dose was increased from an initial 25, up to 50, then 75, then 100mcg thyroxine per day. I didn't get better despite being on the correct dose and had to be signed off work. About 18 months after the under active thyroid diagnosis, I was diagnosed with ME. I'm now on 125mcg and that's as high as I'll be allowed to go, as I'm at the top end of the blood test scale with that dose. Good luck! I know how hard it is.

It does take a while to get the rigth dose. Whenever mine changes, I have to get it checked in a couple of months to see if it's in the right levels, then 6 months thereafter. So like everyone else said, at least every 6 months you should get it checked.

I have it checked 4 or 5 weeks after every dose increase. After the last test the consultant just said it was inconsistent with previous results and sent me for a repeat - should know next week what the score is. As I don't work - just look after my 4 children! - I can't get signed off from anything!!
