What else could this be (other than cancer)?

Haahooooo · 21/07/2015 20:24

For the past week or so, I've had the sensation of food stuck in my throat / chest.

Inconvenient, so I went to see GP, who wasn't sure what to make of it so she phoned the hospital, who want to see me urgently in case it is cancer?!!

Surely there can be other explanations? I don't want to google too much as I'll freak myself out. But I'd really like to know of other things this could be that are less serious.

Any thoughts? DC are 2 and 1 so I'm getting very upset here...

Thank you x

It'll be globus

Sallystyle · 21/07/2015 22:16

I get this all the time.

Globus Hysteticus or something. Mine is related to anxiety.

I also got it when I got acid reflux.

Hellion7433 · 21/07/2015 22:19

White Bread does that to me.

Hellion7433 · 21/07/2015 22:20

Infact wheat generally

MarvinKMooney · 21/07/2015 22:33

It's so understandable to be alarmed when you get such a quick referral to hospital, but the chances are it'll be minor.

A couple of years ago, I had blood in my wee but it didn't sting like when you get cystitis. I called the doc just expecting the usual anti-b prescription to be issued, but was told to get down to the surgery immediately. A couple of days later, i was having scans and all sorts of tests. Quite scary and my mind was running riot with the urgency of it all. All was fine though, and put down to 'one of those things'. its a shame they couldn't work that one out before they shoved the camera up my wee hole

Sometimes certain symptoms trigger a particular set of tests in a short timeframe. Try not to worry. Flowers

sadie9 · 21/07/2015 23:56

Maybe the berroca is increasing stomach acid.

LuluJakey1 · 22/07/2015 00:04

Anxiety- that is what it was with me. Try not to worry- that makes it worse.

gingeroots · 22/07/2015 11:35

Haahoo - let us know how you got on .
I've been down this road ,it was cancer ,but I'm fine now .Very important that caught early so good they're checking .

Thinking of all the people who have problems swallowing - and it's never really sorted out .This www.mumsnet.com/Talk/general_health/2431122-Functional-Dyspepsia-I-think-thats-just-a-term-the-Docs-use-because-they-have-no-idea for example .

The consultant who did my endoscopy and found the cancer said to me " It's the people who have problems swallowing where I can't find a cause that I feel sorry for ."

Good luck ,do update .

Haahooooo · 22/07/2015 11:57

Gingeroots thank you for posting and so sorry to read about your cancer. So happy though that you are fine now.

My appointment is at 3.30pm so will update this evening - although I'm worried they won't be able to tell me much yet today.

Ah ,thanks Haahoo .I was a bit worried about posting as didn't want to add to your worry .

In my case the guy doing the endoscopy wanted to wait until my partner ( who was picking me up ) arrived and see us together . Can't remember exact conversation but he made it plain that he'd seen something ,that he'd send " brushings " off for biopsy but that I'd probably need another endoscopy for for more samples .

So I think they have a very good idea as soon as they look . That's only my experience of course but I guess it's a fairly narrow space and they can spot
any growths straight away .So ,fingers crossed ,you'll know something today .

Feel for you - 3.30 a crap time ,so long to wait .Will be thinking of you and sending positive vibes . x x

Thanks again all for your support.

The consultant examined briefly and thinks it's most likely to be muscular / tension related, or possibly something to do with the thyroid. He thought cancer was unlikely.

There will now be tests on Monday (ultrasound and 'barium swallow') and I will have a final result next Wednesday. Will try and relax until then!

thehumansaredead · 23/07/2015 07:18

I had this & it was thyroid related, has mostly gone since taking levothyroxine for underachievement thyroid.
Hope it resolves quickly for you.

NapoleonsNose · 23/07/2015 07:28

I had a similar thing a few years ago. Particularly when I was lying down I could feel smething stuck in my throat. Turned out to be a cyst on my thyroid. All OK now though. Hope you get it sorted soon OP.

fhdl34 · 23/07/2015 07:32

Glad they're doing tests quickly, my mum and dad both have hiatus hernias and they spasm, that was my first thought

IFancyRichard · 23/07/2015 07:34

I read this and immediately thought hystericus globus. Really common and a message to you to try and resolve that stress :)
(So easy to say...so hard to do)

suicra · 23/07/2015 13:41

I had that sensation. Food and even my pill was getting stuck. Turns out is a multi nodular goitre as a result of a long undiagnosed thyroid problem that had gotten progressively worse over time. Once meds kicked in goitre reduced and so did the swallowing issues. Scans had to be done to diagnose. So it doesn't necessarily mean cancer. Hope you have answer soon

Haahooooo · 29/07/2015 15:59

In case anyone is still following this, or worrying about the same thing in future:

Tests came back today and no physical cause was found, so no cancer thank goodness.

Dr explained tension / stress can cause muscles to close gullet inappropriately.

So I'm going to work on relaxing..Grin

Diggum · 29/07/2015 20:46

Glad to hear it OP. Time to book a nice beach holiday perhaps? living vicariously

Haahooooo · 29/07/2015 21:50

Thank you everyone. So relieved.

Diggum a beach holiday is exactly what we are planning now Grin

Fizrim · 29/07/2015 22:32

That's what I call a good update! Although always slightly frustrating to be told something is down to stress as it's hard to calm down to order! A holiday would be an excellent idea, enjoy.

Emmakh1 · 23/01/2022 01:24

Hello there? That would likely be laryngospasms, caused by calcium and/or vitamin d deficiency. Get calcium lactate supplements, get enough sun, don't eat more than your stomach can handle, because acid reflux can irritate your larynx and cause spasm. Reduce stress because stress lowers calcium. Hope this helps.
