ds1 fighting for breath, very bad chest infection

ds1 has got a chest infection (caught from me) . I spent most of last night going in and out of his room giving medicines/rubbing Vick on his chest/back/reassuring him. He is much worse today, his breathing is really laboured, his chest is sucking in with the effort to breathe, he can't talk properly because his breath catches at the end of each word. I can hear his chest rattling and wheezing all the way down his back, but he isn't coughing anything up. I have had a serious chest infection myself for the last week (I thoughti t was gone, but it has come back) and it has been a really bad one, for the first few days of it I didn't cough up anything either but then started coughing up really rock-hard infected lumps of blood-stained green stuff. (Yes, I know, TMI, but I am worried ). I assumed mine was worse because I used to smoke, but ds1 seems to be in an even worse state than me.

I have a GP appointment for him later this morning (dh is taking him, because I have no voice at all this morning) but it's not his own GP. I am really worried, crap lungs run on both sides of our family, in fact dh's father died of emphysema, they think his lungs may have been weakened by a severe infection as a child

Does anyone have any advice on how I can clear his chest/halp him to breathe/get him to eat? I don't care what he eats at this point, I have asked dh to get chocolate buttons in case he will eat those - he really is so ill and he's very miserable.

and very pale as well. once she had the neb she pinked up again.

SpaceCadet · 20/11/2006 10:54

ive only just seen this..i hope everything is ok, sounds like he may have a severe chest infection or one which has possibly turned to pnuemonia..i had it myself in january and remember it only too well, hopefully your gp will arrange for him to be admitted to hospital.
try not to be upset with your dh, its possible that your ds has deteriated rapidly over 24 hours so he probably didnt appear as ill when you were in london and he was probably loathe to spoil yout trip.

Bugsy2 · 20/11/2006 11:04

Just to reassure you that it may not be too bad, DD had a bad chest infection when she was tiny, only about 1 & she was doing all that sucky in stuff under her ribs. The cool fresh air on the way to the GP immediately helped & after 24 hours of strong antibiotics she was much, much better.
Please don't panic yet. Hopefully it will be good news from the GP.

+Have just phoned dh on mobile, he is still sitting in the waiting room with ds`1 in his lap, he says he asked the receptionist to bump him up the queue because it was urgent, and she said "no". So he still hasn't been seen, and dh is furious with me because I said if he hadn't insisted properly when I call him back in 5 mionutes, I am going to come with ds2 and do it myself.

dont let this become a battle between you and dh

let him deal with it himself - I know its hard as I wuold be doing exactly the same as you as am control freak who cannot believe anyone else can do as good a job as me

sounds like broncilitus (sp??) ds had this at 5 months kept taking him to the doctors they kept saying common cold in the end after 3 weeks one doctor said A&E so we took him there and they said it was broncilitus very shallow breathing you could hear all the shit on his chest

hope your ds gets better

foxinsocks · 20/11/2006 11:20

he's in the right place greeny and as misdee said, they will prob have a neb and other stuff there if it is an emergency - otherwise, they'll sort things out with the hospital - admission is often smoother when done by the GP anyway (if he needs that)

SpaceCadet · 20/11/2006 11:22

phone the doctors yourself and say your son is having difficulty breathing

Greensleeves · 20/11/2006 11:31

I am really annoyed now, have just heard from dh - they sent ds to see the practice nurse instead of the GP who he was meant to be seeing. The nurse said he needs a nebuliser and has "gone to try and speak to a doctor"!!! DH has just sat there like a big pudding being messed about and not said anything so I am going to take ds2 (will have to carry him all the way, because dh has taken the pushchair) and go and butt in myself.

OP posts:
nutcracker · 20/11/2006 11:33

TBH if it is a chest infection and they just give him a nebuliser you may well end up back in a&e later anyway.

SherlockLGJ · 20/11/2006 11:33

Give me strength.

Go Greeny, kick whatever ass is required and if that includes your DH at this stage well so be it.

JennyLeevesmilkandcookiesforSa · 20/11/2006 11:36

sometimes I am bloody sure it is the receptionists jobs to keep sick people away from the doctors , had the same thing when ds was a baby ran to Dr's and asked t get him seen and ended up leaving as 'there is no way with out an appointment'

Saturn74 · 20/11/2006 11:39

If the surgery are messing you about, get your DS to hospital, Greeny.

His symptoms sound just like those of DS2 last month, and he needed nebulisers and oxygen.

I ended up writing a letter of complaint to the hospital because the nurse was dismissive of me - until she did his peak flow reading and sats.

I'm sure your DS will be fine once they help ease his breathing - poor mite.

thats terrible, bloody doctors surgery. hate it when they do this, the app was for a doctor not a bloody nurse and low and behold the doctors intervention is still needed anyway, when you get him home from doctors surgery greensleeves just put him in the car and take him straight to hospital for a second opinion.!

FFS .. how difficult is it to say My DS can't breathe

if a receptionist ignores that she should be sacked

I am sure he'll be fine

thinking of you gs

misdee · 20/11/2006 12:13

i rushed in and said asthma attack nicole williams, and they rushed the nurse out.

the practise nurse can give a neb, dont worry about that, then the gp should come into assess, they almost sent dd1 to a and e last week as she was still 'catching' her breath after the neb.

SpaceCadet · 20/11/2006 12:15

oh fgs
