My Ds 17mths has very chubby feet and the nails on his big toes keep growing in. It's only slightly and i usually just try to then cut his nails and the swelling dissapears. It keeps happeneing though and i'm worried that it may be painful for him. I always cut his nails with clippers so i cut them straight across, which is what i thought you were meant to do.

Anyone else's kids had this problem ??

NC my eldest son now 10 sometimes gets an ingrowing toenail and in the past I have had to lance the red area to let the pus out - disgusting I know, I don't really know why it happens but has done since he was a baby. His toenails are quite soft and bendy at the edges and now that he's older he cuts his own nails and does them too short. I don't really know what you can do about it. I bathe them and put tea-tree oil on when they get sore.

Yeah my Ds's nails are quite soft and bendy too. They are quite an odd shape too, almost square which doesn't help.
I try to keep his feet shoeless and sockless as much as poss too.

My DS (15mo) has had the same problem nearly since birth. I did start a thread about it on here once, but didn't get a lot of response about babies or toddlers with this problem. My DH and his family have chronic ingrown toenail problems and have had several operations. My MIL has no toenail at all on one of her big toes and my DH's nails on his big toes are about a quarter the size of a normal persons. How I cut DS's toenails (although I do do it straight across) will have no bearing I don't think.

I am particularly concerned about whether they might cause him pain when he starts walking and I get him proper shoes. I hope some more people respond as I could do with this input as well.

Noticed my 4 yr old and my 16 month old have brittle nails and their big toes seem to be ingrowning. I have similar problems.
Spoke to the chiropodist at Scholl a few weeks back and they are going to look at my dd's feet next visit. She said that in severe cases they can do a local anasthetic and cut the sides of the big toe away - think she said at aged 5. Sounded severe but then when I think of the pain I have gone through (as an adult though not as a child) would have probably opted for it if I'd known about it. Anyone know about this op?

Dear Bron, the op you refer to is v common for the problem. I have had it done once, but my DH has had it done several times. It wasn't that unpleasant, but can leave you with funny looking toes and is no guarantee that it won't reoccur (at least in the case of my DH and my MIL).
