CROUP.....yes, it appears it's that time of year again. Where are my partners in crime?

Poor kids have been coughing all afternoon while we were out. Have dragged them home (rather than staying out for dinner!) because I can see that they're going to be croupy tonight aarrgghh

I know there are loads of people on here whose children get lots of croup but I can't for the life of me remember who you are. Was wondering if anyone else's children have started with it.

Well, DD1 woke w/a slight temp this morning to go w/her croupy cough. Poor lamb! Those pink cheeks.

She was asking for a drink of water and telling me, 'I feel sick' and wanting a cuddle.

She's had some nurofen. Luckily I had the foresight to pick up some 7Up and ginger ale to dilute.

DH says she's snug in her bed w/Dora the Explorer DVD on - we moved the TV/DVD from our bedroom to hers.

foxinsocks · 21/11/2006 09:38

try not to let the air dry out too much in her room - if you normally have your radiators on at night, shove a bowl of water or wet towels on them

awwww expat - it is the perfect time to snuggle in bed with some TV! Poor dd - hope she gets better soon.

Can I join the croup group please? I had ds and dd on either side of me in bed last night barking away bless them, whatever way I turned I was coughed at in the face so guess i'm going to be ill soon too. I have had virtually no sleep especially as my two seem to like to sleep horizontally across the bed, whereas dp was quite snug on his own in dd's bed They aren't that bad this morning just look a little peaky and are snotty but am keeping dd of pre school (again!).

foxinsocks · 21/11/2006 09:55

how lovely for you! why do children always do that (lie horizontal) in our beds?

when do they grow out of croup, does any one know?
I thought it was a toddler/baby type thing yet ds had it the night before last and he is 3.4.
He had it terribly as a tot but hasnt had it for ages.

ledodgychristmasjumper · 21/11/2006 09:59

I don't know but it's damned uncomfortable as I was lying there tossing and turning I thought how strange it was that ds is still kicking me in the ribs as he was doing this time last year but from the outside (he's one on Saturday)!

foxinsocks · 21/11/2006 09:59

mine still get it (at age 6 and 5) but they really are the upper end for it I think. On that netdoctor link, I think it says they normally get it when they are under 5.

My dd is 3.8 and has it I think it can last throughout childhood.

expatinscotland · 21/11/2006 10:00

I hope they grow out of it, Don!

DD1 is also 3.4.

It's doing the rounds at nursery and she's missing the Children in Need PJ party today.

She told DH, 'I feel better!'

But she's still got a slight temp and those ruddy cheeks, so she needs to stay home.

foxinsocks · 21/11/2006 10:00

oh yes - those little feet can still fit between ribs and really hurt can't they!!

I hope you will nudge dp to do night duty tonight ledodgy!

ledodgychristmasjumper · 21/11/2006 10:02

Oh I will!

Donbean · 21/11/2006 10:09

oh,ok.
It really scared me that night, i had bundled him into the car and was on the way to A&E! we got to the roundabout at the end of our road when he had fallen asleep and his breathing was back to normal! (was raining outside and he was sat up in car seat)
Turned round and went home. Put him to bed sat up with a soggy towel over his radiator and he was fine.
Heyho!

ledodgychristmasjumper · 21/11/2006 10:09

Grr have just rang him in work and told him I was keeping dd off nursery and he said 'why what's wrong with her?' He didn't even realise she was up all night and just thought he'd got into her bed because she'd got into ours!

foxinsocks · 21/11/2006 10:17

oh poor you Donbean. Sometimes the cold night air works wonders on the cough but there's no point taking any chances with croup if you think it's turning nasty.

ledodgy, just settle yourself nicely in dd's bed tonight and put the kids in your bed. I'm sure dp will understand!

Had my first and very scarey experience of croup last winter. DS1,2 and 3 all had it within days of each other. I spent many a night sitting in our bathroom with the shower on hot and steamy. Ds2 woke up with that horrible, hollow sounding cough the other night but it seems to have passed.

MerlinsBeard · 21/11/2006 10:28

How is everyones DC today?

DS1 still has a cough but the croupy episode has passed. Our house gets quite cold if there is no heating on so the cold in their room must have helped. Was handy that ds2 was ill and had a temp or he would have frozen!

What it a stridor? i keep seeing that word on here but i don't know whta it is!

foxinsocks · 21/11/2006 11:33

here's stridor for you

it's a noise they make when breathing

OP posts:
foxinsocks · 22/11/2006 12:39

how are the croupy ones?

Mine are both fine now - both have horrendous chesty coughs but we are now awash with inhalers here so we'll be Ok. They are both back at school so that's a relief at least!
