Vaccines - would you vaccinate a child who is recovering from an ear infection and still on antibiotics?

DS2 has an appointment for pre-School boosters on Wednesday (everything except MMR as he didn't have that first time round). He has an ear infection that has escalated. Took him to the Doctor and today and he prescribed antibiotics, the course will finish on Thursday next week. I raised the issue of the jabs with the Dr and said I assumed these would not be given, Dr wants to see DS2 on the Wednesday morning and has said that a decision will be made then as to whether he would be well enough.

My gut instinct whether the Dr says he is well enough or not is not to give jabs to a child who is on antibiotics and who is recovering from an ear infection.

Am I being over anxious or justified?

no, you do it when you are ready and when you think your child is ready

MrsSpoon · 16/11/2006 23:03

I agree foxinsocks, think I'm just going to have to be brave, whatever the Dr says about it being OK to go ahead.

By brave I mean not allow the Dr to talk me into it.

no.

there is absolutely no harm in waiting a couple of weeks.

onesock · 17/11/2006 09:22

No I wouldn't either! And don't worry too much about him getting the diseases as he has a very good chance of still being immune from the first set.

Thanks, sounds like I'm not being over anxious then, that makes a change!

My GP won't vaccinate anyone little ones until off antibiotics and fine for a week afterwards. They said they wanted to be sure that any reaction/high temp following vaccination isn't related to an infection. That made sense to me. Ds missed first MMR 5 times because of recurring ear infections and then absolutely fine when he had MMR.

Could I just ask why you all feel that the vaccinations should be delayed?

I'm just asking because I feel kind of bad now because ds had his second lot of jabs yesterday while still on AB's and after a very VERY long spell of chest infections.

MrsSpoon · 17/11/2006 22:14

emkana, I am a little anxious re jabs anyway, I'm pretty much convinced that DS1 had a speech/development regression after the MMR (although that could be a whole other thread), decided not to give DS1 the booster and DS2 hasn't had the MMR.

Based on my previous experiences I don't want to take any risks. My Drs surgery advises against jabs if children are unwell and I'm not a big fan of antibiotics either and would like DS2's immune system/good bacteria in his gut to get back to normal before asking him to cope with jabs too, however this is based on my own paranoid and probably skewed vision/understanding of vaccines and antibiotics. My Dr however said it he was fine he should get them.

Last sentence sort of contradicts what I said about my Drs surgery advising against jabs if they are unwell but the Dr said if DS2 was fine by Wednesday, even if still on the antibiotics he should have the jabs.

well I didn't get ds2 done because he had a cold - he was about 18 mths when he had his first set of jabs as well - I just rang up and cancelled the appt

eclipse · 17/11/2006 23:47

emkana,
I only delayed because I had the choice and ds was quite unwell and in pain already. I wasn't particularly concerned that it would have been dreadful for him to have the jabs. If he'd been on long-term ABs I'd have gone and got him jabbed anyway.
