You could try a night splint:

I've had two bouts of this in the last 10 yrs or so.The first time I went to a physio and he used ultrasound and ice packs. He also told me to wear shoes that weren't too flimsy like wellies or sandals. It went away after about 3-4 months.
The next time was about 2 yrs ago after training for the moonwalk.I walked a 20 mile walk and it came back. This time I tried acupunture and ultrasound and stretching exercises on the backs of my legs.It improved after another 5 months or so.
I am always susceptible to it if I wear wellies or do a lot of walking barefoot.
Hope that helps.

cowmad · 17/11/2006 00:15

really truly now i can cure this for you..i have had years of treatment.. injections ..jelly stuff ...pain killers...but..i went to see a specialist(about the 3rd one)and he said
every morning that you wake up and put your foot on the ground you tear the elongated muscle on the underneath of your foot, which has tried to heel overnight, but you tear it again by putting weight on it so wahy you have to do and this has been a revellation to me is
get a pair of 2 inch really comfortable wedgy type shoes and put your feet into them

THE FIRST THING

every morning, literally the second you put your foot out of bed and try very hard to keep the same shoes on for at least 10 days

yes 10 days this keeps your foot "shortened" by keeping tham in a heel and you dont tear the muscle, the one that tears every morning hence the pain. This allows the muscle to heal properly.
this does work and you can spend thousands going to one of those foot clinic places and they will charge you a couple of grand for the same advice

keep your feet in eleveted heels constantly for 10 days and be pain free!!

brimfull · 17/11/2006 00:41

Sounds a great idea cowmad, will definately try it next time I get it.What about blokes ,do they still have to prance around in heels for 10 days!

cowmad · 17/11/2006 00:44

ohh yes!!and bloo*Y funny it is too!

no they have to go to expensive foot doctor for a bed to scan their foot and come up with a similar/exact idea and then buy the shoes to go with their hidden inside lifts!!ooh an pay the foot doctor!

suedonim · 17/11/2006 14:32

I have PF at the moment - am about 10 mths into my second bout of it. Apparently, because it's a tendon/muscle injury it heals very slowly, 18mths being common. In contrast to CM, I was told to gently stretch my foot in the morning before getting out of bed and certainly on the days I remember to do that I have less pain. I also bought gel shoe supports from Boots (haha!) which help the pain.

When I first started this latest PF I was also suffering knee pains - I felt like an old lady, shuffling round the place!

Panyanpickle77 · 17/11/2006 15:35

My mum has been suffering with this for the last 4 years, and is in agony every day (but still gets up and goes to work, despite the pain!) She has been told the same as you suedonim with the stretching excersises, but has had some special foot mounts made by her podiatrist as well. Ideally you need to be in anenvironment where you are not bearing weight on your feet for long perionds of time (my mum has a job where she stands for 8 hours a day, thus making her problem worse). She also had steroid injections into her heals on the recommendation of her Doctor but that seemed to make it worse, and her podiatrist was not impressed with the doctor. Speak to your GP and see if you can get a refferal to a physiopherapist. They should be able to advise you on the best techniques and excersises to aleviate your condition.....Good Luck

Ladies, thank you so kindly for your help and advice, i have never met or spoken to anyone who has this, so this is of great help to me.
Like i said it is exactly 3 years i have had p/f and is v,v painful, i have had the ultra sound treatment along with ice pack on it when i can, its just so frustrating knowing im not aloud to do any excercise until i have a pain free day (but when will that be) Ive already put on so much weight I have also attended the bio-mechanics clinic and again, got know where, i was considering going private, just to get the pain away!!
Cowmad, i will try that, now that i have a career change i can wear any kind of shoes , so i will let you know how i get on.
Suedonim, i too just recently have had alot of pain in my knee and hip, is this possible it is the p/f??? I was beginning to worry i had arthritus.
NoNickname, thanks for your reply and also to ggirl.

I wear Merrills clogs from the minute I get up till I go to bed. Can't ever go around in bare feet anymore. I stretch constantly and I went to see a Cranio Therapist and I believe that helped me too (as weird as that sounds). It is terribly painful, but it is getting better for me. When I went to the foot doctor they could see heel spurs in the xray.

lynneclynne · 17/11/2006 15:51

sunchowder, would you say bare feet makes p/f worse??? (im always in bare feet, in summer i always wear flip flops, so i guess this wouldnt help it either, along with having a career were i stood all day for the last 15 years!!

OP posts:
sunchowder · 17/11/2006 15:55

Yes, bare feet makes it worse!!! I always went with bare feet, in fact when I started to work out of the house, I went barefoot almost 24 hours a day (except when out of course!)--after 4 years of it, I developed the heel spurs.

lynneclynne · 17/11/2006 16:01

Thanks for that sunchowder, i appreciate the advice.

4 years, Mrsaek? Your poor mum, she has my sympathy.

Lynne, I don't think the knee problem was anything to do with PF in my case as my knees got better, thank goodness. I hope something does the trick for you, having this condition makes you realise just how hard your feet have to work.

peegeeweegee · 17/11/2006 16:12

I suffer from this too, currently nearly 9 months into my 3rd bout in 8 years. It is soo painful, I limp to the bathroom in the morning like some wizened old lady..

My only problem with the 2 inch heel shoe suggestion is that I am well over 6 ft tall, so any type of heel is a huge no no for me...

My problem is that I just love to be barefoot, can't stand shoes, so am not really helping myself...

lynneclynne · 17/11/2006 16:15

suedonim think you may be right!
The p/f i have had for 3 years the knee problem has been the last year along with my hip (all the same side)mmm, maybe it is arthritus??? I did go to the doctor a few weeks back with my hip and got an xray, but all came back normal
Thanks again!!

lynneclynne · 17/11/2006 16:19

peegeeweegee, i know what you mean!! I too love to barefoot it in and around the house/garden and i'd be lost without my flip flops I will try the 2inch heel thing( what i'll look like's another story)
2 inch heels and a pair of pj's LOL

Panyanpickle77 · 17/11/2006 16:30

suedonim my mums podiatrist said its longest case he's ever come across (oooooh lucky her!), but it should burn it self out soon. She had the ultrasound and infrared treatment but was not overly impressed. Her shoe inserts have helped (she also has dropped arches which doesn't make it any better!) but she finds the foot stretching excercises help the most (she did find it eased off a massive amount when she started to do Yoga, but unfortunately she can't go it anymore).

edie123 · 17/11/2006 17:53

Hello love (no advice but thought I would pop my head around the door!!!)

lynneclynne · 17/11/2006 17:58

Hi Edie, how are you dear?? Thought you were still back shift.
