Asherman's Syndrome

hulababy · 15/11/2006 14:53

Back home from my latest consultant's appointment at the hospital. Last time they indicaated I amy have cervical stenosis and that was what was causing me to not have periods.

Today I have a transvaginal scan and a follow up appointment. The scan wasn't the most pleasant experience of my life it has to be said. Feel somewhat tender and in discomfort now! And the two blood tests have left me rather bruised!

I have a new diagnosis though. I am now being treated for Asherman's Syndrome - which is adhesions within the uterus probably caused by either the miscarriage or the c section I have had.

My consultant appears to be a bit of an expert in this area and has written a review of the syndrome - he will e-mail it to be soon.

I have a very thin cervical lining, about 3mm only - should be much more. And although not taking the pill anymore (since last app) the one bleed I did have amounted to nothing much. And the progesterone tablets I took after the last appointmenyto bring on a period didn't bring any bleeding, only the pain.

Doctor had considered getting me down for an internal x ray thing - but due to the very narrow cervical opening (probably not stenosis now) feels that the pain involved for me wouldn't benefit enough. So he will wait till I am under general and do everything at the same time.

I am on the waiting list now for an op, under general. It will involve a camera being used and removal of adhesiosns or something. It's day surgery so go in at 7:30am and home between 6-9pm. Sounds a real fun day! LOL. There is a likelihood that I will need a second op, after this one, to repeat the procedure in other places. I depends on how much they can do in one go, and how many adhesions there are.

Worst bit is the waiting list. 5-6 months is current waiting time. Oh joy!

Oh - and not sure how much it helps with the fertility thing. If this was caused by the childbirth or misccarriage, it doesn't explain why it took so log to concieve the first time(s). It does explain the complete inabaility to get pregnant this last time though. All my hormone blood tests, etc have been normal and indications are that I do ovulate.

Anyone else had this?

I think MartianBishop has Asherman's too.
Crikey, sounds like you have had quite a morning. Good luck with everything

hulababy · 15/11/2006 15:01

I think she knows loads about it, and she used to be a favourite patient of her consultant because she used to teach the medical students about it (in a mini tuorial by the side of her bed!)

hulababy · 15/11/2006 16:28

I'll trya nd catch her online then. Thanks

Hula sweetie, soory to read this. I've had it, it is quite rare.

I had treamnet and then went on to have dd and ds.

Do you want the detail here, or do you want to CAT me???

hulababy · 15/11/2006 17:04

If you'd rather you can e-mail me on claire(dot)king13(at)btinternet(dot)com or on here if you'd like.

I am just trying to find out more about it really, and what to expect. I had never heard of it.

I am finding the pain each month a nightmare right now. It has gotten worse gradually, and especially since coming of the pill 8 weeks ago - now have mid cycle pain as well.

Ohm and there is another sufferer here - also started thread today.

Pain back tonight and not good at moment. Fed up of waiting now. It's been 6 months since my last consultants appointment, and almost a year since I went to GP and had the first referral, and still waiting...

OP posts:
Hulababy · 18/05/2007 16:08

Well, after a long wait - been over 6 months now I have got fed up. I was offered an appointment date in March but it was during my holiday. They said I would then be looking at May time. Not great but nothing I could really do about it. Heard nothing so spent last 3 days phoning. Finally spoke to someone today and I had been moved to the bottom of the list!!! Really cross and told them so. I just do not think it is acceptable to still be waiting. Almost lost it when she said we were looking at August at the earliest, and I am on holiday then too. Grrr! So got a bit cross, polite cross of course.

So, she has now managed to squeeze me into a provisional date of Friday June 22nd. Bit of a pain as it is DD's first Sports Day but it can't be helped. DH can take time out of hospital sitting with me and go, and we can probably round up grandparents as well, so I think she will forgive me. Or we can wish for rain on the 22nd, so Sport's Day is cancelled and moved to the reserve date the week after!

So, at present the 22nd it is. Fingers crossed now.

Hope that it all gets sorted soon.

Hulababy · 18/05/2007 17:44

Thanks; hope so too!

UPDATE

I had my operation yesterday. It is definitely Ashermans and pretty bad too. There are a lot of adhesions - pretty much the whole of the top of my uterus is covered int hem. They have managed to seperate some adhesions yesterday but couldn't do them all in one go. I will go in for another op in 2-3 months.

Today I feel quite sore, and still very groggy from the general. And my mouth and throat feel so rough and dry!

I am signed off work for 10 days which is a nice rest though, and Dh is looking after me well I even got a bouquet of roses and chocolate ice cream too

Long term I have no idea, esp fertility wise. Time will tell and I will know more after next op I guess.

For next month I have to take hormone - HRT in fact. I have 6 HRT tablets to take each day, and then for final 10 days I get another different hormone tablet to take as well. This is to build up the cervical lining, as I currently have none (even though period was due this weekend). Apparantly I will feel very bloated for the next month - oh joy!

So, it's a definite diagnosis and now a sit back and wait, and do it all over again.

Back to more rest and being waited on today now

Hula
This sounds grim, sorry it was so bad but the good thing is at least you know what's the cause of problems I guess - tho not the end result by the sound of it.

Take things easy - if you have not had GA before I found I felt groggy for more than a week really.

Hope you feel better soon.
Cxx

Hulababy · 02/09/2007 10:17

Thanks.

Still tired - despite earlish bed again. But to be expected I guess. Pain killers doing a better job of controlling pain this morning. Was really sore yesterday and pain killers weren't helping.

Have a nice easy day. Katz has taken DD off to Sunday School with her and the girls, so nice and quiet here for me. And then she is cooking us Sunday lunch - so a star all round

Hula - JUst seen this from the Spa thread. If you are in need of visitors I am around this week. Hope you are feeling better today.

Hulababy · 04/09/2007 18:19

Thanks. Yes, a bit better togay. The drugs are now working enough to cover the pain which is definitely an improvement. Ready for more drugs now - can feel the pain again, so at least I know they are working.

I went for a gentle stroll round Meadowhall today, punctuated by coffee breaks Was nice as not very busy. Managed to spend a small fortune on DD though - eek!

Shattered again now though, lol!

Hula, just spotted this from spa thread also! Flipping heck girl, hope you're doing ok, don't try to do too much xx

Hulababy · 05/09/2007 18:12

Oh no worries about that bit. I am practising rest and relaxation big style Thanks!

Pain is a lot more bearable today - trying to manage without painkillers now, which so far isn't too bad.

Hulababy · 01/12/2007 11:10

Just an update here.

Had second op yesterday: hysteroscopy plus more division of adhesions, under general. Came home same day.

The consultant seems to think he has managed to divide all the remaining adhesions this time, and can now see the uterus cavity.

I now have the hormone treatment to contend with again: 6 weeks of 6mg oestrogen (HRT) and for final 2 weeks I have 10mg progesteron as well.

I also have a 5 day course of antibiotics plus a cocktail of painkillers.

I feel much more sore and tender this time round, possibly as he managed to do more I guess. I am also very tired - slept 12 hours last night, and woke up still tired!

My throat is extremely sore this time too, even today. I had some breathing issues when coming round and that may have caused it. Will imrove though.

Next steps are that I will have a HSG scan (???) after my first cycle, sometime in January, and then I go and see the consultant again in March to discuss how things are and we will be able to discuss chances of improved fertility and any further steps on that front too.

A weekend of rest and nothing more for me at the moment. I am shattered!

Hulababy · 04/12/2007 11:16

poor you hula i hope you are doing lots of relaxing and that you are pain free.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 04/12/2007 11:36

Hulababy

HSG is a tubal x-ray. It's a useful test to have as it can give information not easily accessible by other methods. Deformities inside the tube can only be seen on x-ray.

Basically what happens is that a small quantity of special dye (about a teaspoonful) is inserted very carefully and slowly through your cervix into your uterine cavity. The image will appear on the screen showing the state of your uterine cavity and fallopian tubes (whether they are patent - open - or otherwise).

Have had this test myself, it should not be painful providing the dye is injected very slowly and carefully. I was given a couple of painkillers beforehand and was glad of those. Also you will need some sanitary protection post procedure, that dye does come out!.

HTH, do get plenty of rest.

Hulababy · 04/12/2007 11:41

Thanks onlyjoking/atilla - I am doing absolutely nothing today Done nothing really since the op on Friday. Still quite tender so good excuse to lie around for a day or two!

Thanks for info on HSG. Apparantly I have to call to arrange that once I have my first cycle follwoing the op, so in January. Just wasn't explained to me.

very confused

Blandmum · 14/12/2007 19:50

There is an asherman's board, which had cases of sucessful IVF, and you might get additional support there. If you google, you should find it.

Have you had any hormonal treatment to help to re-line the endometrium of your uterus?

I did, and in the end had two sucessful pregnancies.

Hula, hugs to you....I missed this post, or I would have sent you all my best wishes sooner.
