Smelly wee - urine infection in toddler?

My 12m old dd has smelly wee last couple of days, which I can only describe as a bit of a stale turnippy / cabbagey smell - especially strong overnight.

Also nappies much drier than usual.

Anyone know if this is a symptom of a urine infecttion or something else which needs treatment?

At a guess, probably needs to drink more.

jalopy thanks for replying, I know I would think that if it was my own wee!

But I think she drinks quite a lot - yesterday at the childminder she had 2 cups or water and cup of milk, thats ontop of 2 breast feeds before she goes, 2 feeds during the evening and 2 during the night.

Just wondered if anyone knew anything - NHS direct is so vague I find.

hi bumbleweed, my ds aged 2 had a very nasty urine infection a month and he absolutely stank! it was a foul smell and it lingered in the house for days. i cant describe it but probably like youve said cabbagy/rotten smell. he also had a temperature and kept grabbing his crutch.i took a urine sample to the docs and he had blood/protein in it and it was visibly cloudy, 2 lots of antibiotics and it went.

hes been poorly again today and grabbing his crutch again and been hot so im going to get another sample up the docs in the morning.

bit difficult to get a sample out of a 12month old, might be an idea to try (takes ages and lots of patients!). the docs will test it there and then and let you know. good luck

thats meant to be a month ago

took dd to doc's on friday. He said that you must get these things checked out. Until they're 7, kidneys aren't fully developed and untreated infections can be serious. Did a sample with dd this morning. Got dd to stand in the bath, and pee i managed to catch enough that way! She is older though. Doc said health visitors have special nappies that you can get and use to test.

bumbleweed,how is dd this morning?

hi 7up and lambchop thanks so much for replying

dd was fine last night and plenty wet, so seems like everything okay, perhaps just a very slight infection as no temperature or anything

but I'm a bit concerned if there is any chance that untreated even slight infections could be serious

hope your babies both okay too

hi bumbleweed, glad dd okay. ds hasnt got an infection, something viral as they normally always say. im relieved because i didnt want that awfulsmell in the house again goingfor a kip now to get over thenightshift with him

7up great news that no infection. I know, everything is a virus these days! hope you catch up on your sleep soon.

I had a thought today about dd - shes been eating alot of tangerines this week, I know if I drink too much orange juice myself I am prone to cystitis - could be similar?
