Are you treating your partner? They might be passing it back to you. Are you seeing a GP about it or lying to a pharmacist about how frequently you are using the Canesten. Frequent bouts of thrush can be due to other conditions, so go and see your GP.

alexa1 · 14/11/2006 19:31

what other conditions can cause this to recur? my GP said, pregnancy, antibiotics and stress are the main factors for thrush. she didn't seem overly cocerned about it. i have been about it. she just gave me another prescription for canesten combi.
just a thought. are bowel problems linked to thrush? i suffer bowel probs, i.e, constipation, then diarrhea, i think its IBS.

I have a friend who often has thrush and also has IBS - she's started a diet where she's totally cut out all foods with yeast in, and then I think you can gradually reintroduce them again. She said so far it has helped with IBS and should apparently sort out body's yeast imbalance. I'm not sure what the diet is called - might be able to find something on web about it.

Go to chemist and get a Diflucan (fluconazole)tablet. You take one tablet and that is it. They cost about £12. You can get it over the counter. Boots also have them. You could request prescription too.

smittenkitten · 14/11/2006 19:59

god, its miserable isn;t it. i suffer similarly. the fluconazole tablets are fab but pricey - so def get them prescribed. you might need 2. I have recently been to my gp about the most persistent bout i've ever had and she prescribed a course over 6 months. You can tkae them with the pessaries and or cream. another MNetter recommended using athlete's foot strenth canesten which really helped me. Also take a good probiotic (not in those yoghurt drinks) and avoid antibiotics is you possibly can.

Absolute king and queen of thrush here. When I get it I cannot get rid of it.
Constant reccurences probably mean you are not really getting rid of it, so will need a course of anti-fungals by mouth.
Sporonox, Ketakanazole, and Diflucan all work against thrush, but the one dose of diflucan may not be enough to shift it.
NOTHING works on my thrush from doctors, as I have become immune to all treatments, and started to get told it "was all in my head"
However Homeopathy has had fantastic results-try Candida or cimicfuga (I think it's that)

jennster · 14/11/2006 21:24

Uncontrolled diabetes where you have high blood sugar gives great conditions for candida to multiply.

Canesten Athletes Foot AF cream is a con and just the same as normal canesten clotrimazole 1% cream. The cream you get in the combi pack (thrush cream) is 2% so stronger.

Canesten capsule is cheaper than diflucan capsule by about £3 and exactly the same thing. You can also get a combi capsule pack (with the cream) but it sounds like you might have loads. It might be worth making a partner use the cream twice a day for a week.

Only way bowel (as far as I know)can affect thrush is if you are transferring candida by wiping back to front not front to back but I'm SURE you won't be doing that!

Hope this helps and you get it sorted soon.

Also check iron levels, if low this can cause thrush.

alexa1 · 15/11/2006 13:47

fizzbuzz - didn't realise iron levels have something to do with thrush.

i used to get it lots but since i cut out nearly all sugar i very rarely get it but if i have a bad food day and gorge on crap i will wake up with it for sure the next morning

alexa1 · 15/11/2006 13:50

Do u take anything for it baktus??

OP posts:
buktus · 15/11/2006 13:53

when i do get it i usually take 2 fluconazole tabs 2 days apart, but dont buy the branded one (diflucan or canestan) the chemist should have there own brand mine cost £4.99 instead of about £10/12 HTH

alexa1 · 15/11/2006 14:03

thanks . i know the co-op do their own brand for 4 or £5. i will buy them. do u take probiotics too?

OP posts:
buktus · 15/11/2006 14:15

no i have never tried it or anything else other than the tablets really i have never tried the yougurt on tampon thing, if mine was happening all the time regardless of diet i prob would try other remedies but i know mine is diet , shouldnt have such a sweet tooth , have you tried cutting out sugar or are you still a bit puzzled as to why its happening all the time

alexa1 · 15/11/2006 14:20

i might try and cut out sugar. i am craving sugar big time at the moment, hence why i have got thrush. the shop assistant in Holland & Barratt recommended some tablets to take to balance the good bacteria in the gut, can't remember what they are called now.

H&B were probably talking about acidopholus.

fizzbuzz · 15/11/2006 14:47

Yeah always having iron levels checked, don't know why it causes it but it does apparently-never seems to do much for me, but have been told this by loads of medical people

alexa1 · 15/11/2006 19:43

acidopholus. - does anyone know if i can take this with anti-depressants? don't want to take something that might not agree.

Spidermama · 15/11/2006 19:49

This may have been said already, but there's no point killing off the fungus but failing to address the reasons why the fungus got out of control in the first place.

You need to reduce sugar, take a long course of good probiotics (acidophulus bifidus lactobacillus) if you#ve had anti biotics recently, cut out all yeast and fungal stuff (wine, bread, soya sauce, mushrooms, anything fermented). Eat loads of garlic. Also thread some cotton through a garlic clove, put a couple of drops of Tea Tree oil in the clove and put it up inside overnight.

Good luck.

I've found homeopathy useful for thrush if all else fails.

fizzbuzz · 15/11/2006 20:46

Alexa1 it is completely safe to take with AD's.
I will back up last post about homeopathy working if all else fails

thorn · 16/11/2006 13:24

I've had it every month for the last 4 and it;s driving me mad! I seem to be free of it for a few years then it comes back with vengence. I'm now on probiotic vitamins & minerals so fingers crossed for next month!

fizzbuzz · 16/11/2006 13:54

Thorny, go and see a homeopath. I had chronic thrush (ie never went away) for years. One dose of candida from homeopath and it went away for 10 years, until I was put on an extended course of antibiotics.
I'm not even a big believer in alternative medicine, but it worked-I didn't even get it when pregnant.
Homeopthy encourages the body to heal itself thats why it stayed away for so long.Even when it returned it worked again.

fizzbuzz · 16/11/2006 14:26

Thrush is a horrible condition that is really wearing. I think if men suffered from it, a vaccination would have been invented years ago....or am I being sexist?

WeWishUAMerryXmasNANappyNewYr · 14/12/2006 02:18

try adding a few drops of grapefruit seed extract to water and drink three times a day.

loopylopey · 14/12/2006 07:38

try not using too harsh a shower gel or soap either, that can aggravate thrush too.

acidophilus is great, you only need to take tablets for about 1-2 weeks for it to take effect in your gut.
