MRI and sedation?

DS1 (16) is having a cardio MRI in just over a week. He's not particularly worried about going into the machine but does think it will be difficult to not fidget. Also, he has had panic attack type symptoms which could be attributed to his cardiac problems or could just be panic attacks. We won't know until we have the results. But I'd hate for him to have an episode while in the scanner and them have to pull the test if it could be avoided.

I'm unsure whether it's worth phoning up ahead of time and ask for mild sedation or if he will be fine without it. Has anybody with experience of MRI got any advice on the pros and cons of sedation. Also, he might have to hold his breath for periods of time or take deep breaths on request. Will he be able to follow these instructions if he is sedated.

gnome... We see the scans as they are being taken yes, although we aren't trained to diagnose (that's the radiologists job) we can obviously sometimes see what the problem is but we aren't aloud to comment on the scan. (just to complicate things there are some reporting radiographers but most are not) hope that's helpful I feel as though I waffled a bit lol xxx

Thanks natdee! He said something to me over the headphones as I came out of the machine and I was worrying I missed something because I couldn't hear it! Glad to know I didn't Smile

Well I took ds for his MRI on Tuesday only to get there and find out we were not booked in for an MRI after all. Confused Our GP definitely said she had booked an MRI on the advice of a Cardiologist. We were booked into clinic though and seen another Cardiologist.

DS had another ECG and a chest X-ray which the Cardiologist said looked normal. Smile He said he had read the report from the Echocardiogram but wasn't overly concerned but he couldn't see the actual Echo because it was done at a different hospital. He said the symptoms DS was describing didn't sound good though so wants to start from scratch with his own tests.

DS has now got a cardio call loop monitor on for a week and will then get another echo. On the one hand I t's so frustrating, but on the other, DSs dream of joining the army look a little more possible.

It's lucky DS wasn't prescribed something and turned up half stoned to see the cardiologist Grin

surely it would be a good thing if he did have one of his panicky episodes, and it was recorded in full, then you would know exactly what it was.

Yeah, he had an episode yesterday so hopefully it will just show as a panic attack. He's had stabbing pains today too. There a few other symptoms that I'm more concerned about so hopefully he will catch them too.
