Disappearing tooth

DD (8 months) finally had one of her top incisors begin to emerge on Friday after weeks of drooling and gnawing. However, after making a brief appearance for a day or so it has now gone away again. This now seems to result in her being in quite a bit of pain - she's not drooling, gnawing or red cheeked any more - instead she's quite upset by anything getting near her mouth.

Is it normal for a tooth to disappear like this? Should we just help her through the pain until it re-emerges on its own course?

I think that's all you can do. My ds 7 mths has had painful bulging front gums for months and now his side teeth have come down, leaving him looking like baby dracula. A tea spoon out the fridge is good for them to gnaw on or an ice pop from the freezer with the shape edges cut off but plastic intact. Let it thaw a bit though you don't want her tongue getting stuck on it! My friend told me of some powder that you can get from super drug that numbs the gum. Don't know what it's called though.
