Ventolin, should I give it or not?

Went to GP today with 14mth old who has been chesty ever sinceI gave her goats milk at 12mths. She is still bf and appears to have a dairy intolerance. She has had a blood test for this and we are awaiting the result when we see the consultant in 2wks time.

GP said that she is quite wheezy and definitely needs to be given Ventolin (syrup). He also prescribed an antibiotic which I have started her on.

I am unsure what to do. Should I give her the Ventolin or not?

errr well if the GP said she needs it, then why wouldn't you want to give it to her?

if she's wheezy, I'd definitely give it to her.

I'd definitely give it if the GP said so. Ventolin is usually pretty well tolerated, so it should be quite safe (always read the leaflet, though). DS2 was on a Ventolin inhaler from 13 months.

why wouldn't you?

i have asthma. 2 thousand people die every year - in this country. dont underestimate wheezing or a chest infection.

thingsare taken very much for granted in this modern era

being short of breath for a long period of time is tiring.

why put your child through that when giving medicine would make it beter?

The reason I am reluctant is that DS was prescribed an inhaler at same age and it really didn't agree with him, it changed him into the devils own child and in the end he didn't need it. He had a dairy problem and once I took him off the dairy he was fine and had no wheeze....

You are seeing a consultant in 2 weeks time. If your child is wheezy now she needs the ventolin otherwise the GP would not have prescribed it.- give the medicine and discuss with the consultant in due course. I really think that would be the safest course of action.

just give the ventolin. try and get a dose in tonight if possible. my dd1 has had asthma (non dietry related) since she was under a year old. she had a massive attack this morning and ended up needing a nebuliser. she has been wiped out all day over a 30minute attack. we have to take her to a+e if it starts again at any point tonight, plus is on steroid dissolvable tabs for the next 3 days.

Thanks Misdee but LO is asleep now and hopefully for the rest of the night! I shall give it to her tomorrow morning and guage her reaction.

My other reason for being reluctant is that my GP said that DD1 was very wheezy during the summer and prescribed Ventolin then. She had a chest X-ray which turned out to be normal and wheezing disappeared just like that! I was glad that I hadn't given it to her.

I am probably over-reacting. Thanks for the advice and I shall follow-up tomorrow.
