Social Smoking. Is it really that bad??

HI

I am a social smoker. I maybe smoke 5 cigarettes once a week. A friend has told me that this type of smoking is the worse type of smoking for you. Is this true? Can it be worse than smoking 20 a day??

Moondog , you who are passionate about all things crap normally; smoke - well knock me down with a feather

expatinscotland · 13/11/2006 20:42

You don't, Gill, and the trade drops and people start losing their jobs.

I don't go out much anymore in cold weather mostly b/c of the ban.

pesha · 13/11/2006 20:47

I miss smoking

charliecat · 13/11/2006 20:49

How come if i had one fag I would want/need/track down another in 30-50 mins?
To me its the most god awful addictive substance on the planet.
And others can take it or leave it.

expatinscotland · 13/11/2006 20:52

I can take it or leave it.

weirdbird · 13/11/2006 20:53

Me too

Have quit again as I am pregnant, but miss it lots, really don't see how I am going to maintain my status once I am baby free again.

Wish I could just social smoke, but am a all or nothing type of gal

pesha · 13/11/2006 21:37

Me too weirdbird. I keep quitting but then have a few when i go out then its just weekends then its just evenings and before I know it I'm smoking 10 - 15 a day. I've given up again as i'm pg and I know that this time that has to be it. No more cigarettes, ever.

Im feeling very self righteous at the moment though which is helping as I keep seeing other pg people smoking, the woman over the road from me must be about 8 months pg and regularly comes out to stand on her front door step and have a fag If i was gonna smoke whilst pg id at least have the decency to feel ashamed of myself and do it in secret!!

GILL74 · 13/11/2006 23:01

I wonder if the people who smoke while pregnant (in secret or not) really take the time to think about the unborn baby. Would you sit next to new baby in cradle at home while sitting on the nearest chair and smoke. I would like to think the answer to that would be no for everyone. Unfortunately there are some people who choose not to even question their own actions when it comes to smoking in pregnancy

2nervesleft · 13/11/2006 23:07

Ocassional smoking has saved my sanity more than once. Not to mention my marriage. nothing calms me down like a cigarette. Probably smoke 30 a year.

hamstermunker · 13/11/2006 23:08

Nowt social about smoking.

Skribble · 13/11/2006 23:30

Certainly no social smoking in Scotland as they are all freezing their bums off outside now tee hee .

pesha · 13/11/2006 23:41

Gill74 the reason i see her smoking is cos she stands outside to smoke, she doesn't want to smoke in the house with her other 3 children around but she will smoke with a baby inside her. I'm amazed how many pg women i've seen smoking. I know its hard to give up but i love smoking so if i can do it surely anyone can!!

(And I know really Im in no position to take the moral highground here but I have to, looking down on smokers is all part of making sure i dont go back to it!!)

GILL74 · 14/11/2006 09:44

I smoked full-time if you what to call it that before i became pregnant first time. I stopped until ds was 7wks old (can't explain why i went back to it) continued to smoke socially until pregnant the following year with dd stopped again until dd was 5months have now stopped for over 2 months (and no not pregnant) just seem to enjoy the odd one when out for drink with friends DP hates the thought of me smoking always has done so his constant nagging has made it easy for me not to want to bother smoking all the time. If you can stop at least during pregnancy then fine and if not then that's up to yourself. No way am I in the position to judge anyone.

GoingQuietlyMad · 14/11/2006 09:56

I think this is one of those debates where your views polarise depending on which side you sit on. I have spent my entire adult life giving up for a long time, starting again for a short time, then giving up again.

Fortunately I have never smoked at all during pregnancy (even before I realised I was iyswim), but after giving up breastfeeding I always seem to give it another go. This time I am smoking about 6 a day, all well away from the children, but that's not to say I think it is OK.

I know it isn't social. I just get daggers from everyone I know and when people realise that I smoke I see them change their opinion of me. No-one I know smokes, but this just reinforces the feeling that it is rebellious somehow.

As soon as I give up again, I will look back and roll my eyes.

weirdbird · 14/11/2006 11:24

GQM - You are me, I am really keen to stay of them this time, but, if I day dream about smoking again now, what hope do I have...

None of my friends or family smoke, but I started at 15 and have been starting and stopping ever since.

Do you still love it?
