Large Tummy in 17 month old - is it normal?

Apologies for the really bad title. Didn't know how to explain it in a few words. My ds has a very large tummy which is out of proportion to the rest of his body and much larger than other kids his age. He is not overweight and in the last few weeks has been off his food, yet his tummy is still very large. I am going to take him to the dr's to get checked out as we have been worried about this for a while, and now he seems to get quite frequent tummy ache. His tummy has always been larger than average, at my pre-natal scans they commented on how much above average his abdomen circumference was and how out of proportion it was to the rest of him. However like I say in the last few weeks it has seemed more out of proportion than ever. Has anyone else had any experience of this?

Thanks for your concern. I'll phone and ask for an appointment tomorrow hopefully they will be able to see us then. Mondays are a nightmare at our surgery.

Hope you've managed to get an appointment today. I don't want to worry you unduly, but some liver problems can lead to swollen tummy, so would be best to get checked out at doctors. If you don't get anywhere at GPs, tell them you want a 2nd opinion.
Good luck & hope he's better soon.

It's wise to get him checked by GP especially since he is off is food and has frequent pain.

When my son was younger he used to have an amazing 'pot' belly but was in good health. Some children do. It usually disappears as they lengthen in stature.
Sometimes it can be due to trapped wind, constipation or food intolerances.

I've been thinking about your little one today. Don't take any nonsense tomorrow if they say they can't fit him in insist on a home visit. It usually does the trick. As if by magic they find you a slot!

Hi, got an appointment today after a bit of an arguement with the receptionist (but thats another story). Dr says ds's abdomen feels nice and soft so isn't worried about anything there, but would like me to keep a food diary and keep a note of when he has tummy problems as it could be a food intolerance. So will see what happens over the next two weeks. Thank you for all your replies.
