Ive been having major problems with ears, posted a while back about virtigo and feel a bit embaressed posting this !!!

Doctor has found that I years of wax impacted and this could be amajor cause of the pain/inflamation and headaches that I suffer on top of the virtigo. I went down the holistic route and had HOPI ear candeles but after 3 sessions its only cleared a tiny bit. The doctor has now urged me to go down the normal medical route and spend the next 2 weeks putting warmed oil in my ears every couple of days. I then have a session booked in to have them flushed out with a water pressure machine, he says this is less invasive than syringing , but I have no idea what to expect and Im a bit worried. I also am not sure if I should be doing the oil in ears so much??? has anyone ever had this problem or any experience. Ive had some oil put in this evening and I can hardly hear now, Im a bit panicked.

I've had the same problem and it's nothing to worry about. The water flushing feels a bit wierd but it's not painful (or shouldn't be).You might like to ry sodium bicarbonate ear drops as they're equally effective but not oily.2 weeks seems like a long time to wait-the wax should be "soft"(yuk) after about a week.|It's fantastic being able to hear again.Hope this helps

discordia · 03/05/2004 20:03

melsy, just put in a few drops of oil. Olive oil is good. Might be easier if somebody else will do it for you. I cleared my dd's impacted wax by doing a week with Earex drops each night then a week with sodium bicarbonate drops each night (both available from pharmacy). The oily drops (olive oil/Earwax) soften the wax which makes it expand, that's why it dulls your hearing. The sodium bicarb drops will then break the wax up. My (non expert!!) advice is to spend a minute with your head on one side after applying the drops and then plug ears with cotton wool for 5 mins. When the wax starts to come out you should see it on the c wool. Have heard that it's great having ears flushed out, you should feel much better. HTH!

Thank you girls , havent seen you around these here parts before or have I ???

Its is sooo sooo very bad though,he was a bit amazed. When ever i get anything its normally an acute case LOL!!!I think thats why he said 2 weeks. He said it wasnt painful like syringing is. I think my dh used sodium b drops and it made it all more blocked??? Dh thankfully will be doing the drops for me. I have pure olive oil that I use for dd. After childbirth this should be a walk over!!! , but Im suffering panic attacks and the whole water machine noise reminds me of things I dont wnat to think about.

melsy, why don't you see if you can have gas and air while you have it done? :D Would be more fun. Good luck, hope it's better soon.

PS - you won't see me round these parts often, am able to control mn addiction and more of a lurker than a poster!

discordia · 03/05/2004 20:34

Oops. Got smiley wrong.

melsy, I've had it done and it's almost pleasant, believe it or not, as long as someone reasonably caring does it, ie most nurses. (Have had one rough one.) There is a very small sort of pumping machine which flushes water in (at blood temp, preferably, when it's cold it's not so nice) and breaks up the wax and sucks the bits out.

The first time I had it done, when I was pretty deaf in both ears, she could only clear one ear the first time so I had to go away and reoil the other ear for a few more days and then - get ready for a gross out - she finally had to use tweezers, very carefully, to remove a kind of candle from my ear. Decades-worth of wax all compacted together and black. UGH!

But the clarity of hearing was blissful.

The wax does come back though, apparently having it removed makes extra be produced to replace it, so the flushing has to be repeated occasionally.

melsy · 04/05/2004 09:41

Hi janh, thank you for that !!!! I have a feeling it will be the same for me though. I like the candle metaphor !! I was worried about a build up happening again because of this treatment. Doc did warn me i may have to have it done a few times. AAARRGGHHH !! I will be soo relieved to hear again though, it will be amazing.

melsy, I had really bad ear wax earlier this year after having chickepnpox (apparently I had such a high temp it melted the wax which ran down onto my ear drum and solidified in a large plug - so quite a bad case!). I used the drops for about 4 weeks actually (had to wait for ds to get over CP before I could go to surgery for appointment to get ears done) and then had them syringed (at least, that's what they called it but I think it's the same thing as your doc is suggesting). It wasn't painful or even uncomfortable at all. I was amazed when I saw how much wax came out!! Apart from feeling a bit dizzy for a few minutes afterwards (because the wax can affect your balance so when it's removed your brain has to re-adjust) it was fine and I felt so much better afterwards (I could hear again!).

melsy · 14/05/2004 17:41

well I had the 1st session this afternoon,it was a bit painful actually because its a bad case and I have a virus which always hurts my ears.being up for 24hrs hasnt helped either. She could only do so much on one side as I was feeling very sick and giddy and it was so badly impacted. I have to do a week of hot oil every night and then go again. I am totally blocked in the the one treated ear and feel lousy and its abit tender . Trust me to get it so acutely !!! I soo wanted it all cleared and to hear again clearly. It should help my virtigo problem though immensly and all the years of headaches and a feeling of unease in my body. Its amazing how a small area of the body can completely throw you out so badly and for so long withought realising what its been.

I sometimes suffer with dizziness and when I clean my ears with buds the buds come out totally clean. Every 6 months or so though I will pull out a plug of dark browny type solid stuff. SHould I have mine done? DD has seriously waxy ears!!! Urgghhh

jodee · 14/05/2004 18:29

Poor you, Melsy. both DH and DS have extremely waxy ears - once years ago abroad on holiday, DH was swimming and one ear became totally blocked and he was in extreme pain. A kindly doctor syringed his ear at no charge; what he removed was almost half a football pitch, all the mud accumulated from years of amateur footy!

Janh · 14/05/2004 18:34

melsy, sorry to hear you feel so bad after the first try - hope it will eventually be cleared, and make you feel much better. It will be worth it! Do you have lots to do or can you lie down and look after yourself? Hugs!

gothicmama · 14/05/2004 18:45

How are you flower thinking of you hugs

suedonim · 14/05/2004 20:36

That sounds very miserable, Melsy, I hope a night's sleep helps you recover. I've been having a similar problem and in fact had one ear 'vacummed out' yesterday. It's always the same ear that clogs up, although after Gingernut's post, I wonder whether this episode was caused by the strep throat with fever that I had a few weeks ago? I felt faint yesterday, too. The nurse said if the wax is actually touching the ear drum, the sudden removal can cause dizziness - I guess because that's where your centre of balance is.

marthamoo · 14/05/2004 20:52

I've had it done too melsy (why is this whole ear wax thing so gross?!) and it is painless. The nurse said to me to put in the oil, or ear drops (I tend to use Earex, can't be bothered with all that warming up the oil) as often as possible - you can't overdo it and the softer it is, the easier the flushing out process.

Apparently, ear wax is very healthy. I'm sure that's as much of a comfort to you as it is to me!

Has anyone tried that Audiclear yet? I couldn't get any at Boots after reading about it on MN. Probably bought up by all ear waxy MNers.

marthamoo · 14/05/2004 20:54

Sorry, hon , skim read this thread and missed the post wher you said you've had it done. Sorry it was so horrid, hope it's better next time (PLENTY of oil, as often as you can - and it's best if you can try and lie down for a while after you've put it in, filled ear upwards) .

melsy · 15/05/2004 10:12

Hiya marthmoo.

Its very painful this morning, like a stabbing pain and its hurting that part of my face too.Im still blocked and cant hear in that ear. Im getting a bit worried now. Is it meant to painful after or is it telling me I have inflamamtion/infection ?? and on top of this I have to put the oil in both ears now and wont be able to hear whatsoever, MOST unpleasant this is.

I like the waxy MN's !!!

melsy · 21/05/2004 08:32

Well I had another flush out yesterday and everything today seems to sound really really different. I seem to be able to pick up the tiniest sounds now, even typing on the keyboard is really strange. I have to go back for a 3rd time though.

Did anyone feel sore after or feel quite coldy with it??? When I swallow its a bit sore.

Piffleoffagus · 21/05/2004 08:39

the colxil drops they use for baby constipation work wonders on ear wax, too I suffered from wax impaction a lot but have regualr syringing which actualyl felt quite tickly and nice.. not awful at all. And amazing afterwards!!!!
Good luck!

melsy · 21/05/2004 08:45

It was actually quite nice in the ear she did last week , like you said alll tickly. But the other ear that was done for the 1st time yesterday is quite sore. I can hear this morning like ive never heard before for years & years !!!

I had one of my ears done recently, after seven days of olive oil (not heated).
The nurse was excellent - felt hardly anything.
Advice from her on avoiding future need for treatment was to use olive oil drops once every week and the problem would never recur.
Reference the cotton buds - one other piece of advice she gave was to bend your arm, look at your elbow and if the thing you're planning to stick into your ear is smaller than the elbow DON'T USE IT.
