Can Anything Be Done For Backache?

Quootiepie · 11/11/2006 22:37

I have the worst backache, and have had it a few years now but haven't really done anything about it. I had physio about 4 years ago, and he said there was nothing more he could do except refer me to his friend, so I left it. Ive ignored it since due to pregnancy, then being overweight... can that affect it? I sometimes can barly change DSs nappy and now have to put the mat on the floor and sit down myself to do it... even bathing him I cant do alone because I cant straighten my back afterwards and can barely move. Im not sure whther to go to the GP as I dont know whether they can do anything...

Have you seen an osteopath?

earlgrey · 11/11/2006 22:43

Where abouts is it in your back?

I posted on MN a couple of days ago and someone helpfully suggested Syndol. I couldn't take it as I was taking Diazipam at the time, but she suggested a paracetamol/codeine tablet, which I took last night.

Since then, I've only had the neck pain.

What have you tried?

BTW my doctor referred me for physio, and when the pain went I discharged myself, leaving myself my own worst enemy. That was about a year ago.

I have tried physio, chiroprator and osteopath. All helped but I found physio the best.

Lose weight.

Start doing pilates or yoga class

learn to lift properly

consider changing your mattress

I have heard the Alexander Technique is helpful but not tried it myself

The pain is... mainly around the bottom of my back. Havent seen an osteopath - what do they do? Not keen on taking medication for it as im BFing.

Pilates. Seriously. It will change your life.

But you need to find a proper studio, not the 'pilates-lite' that lots of gyms offer. They will teach you how to use your core abdominal muscles to support your body instead of taking the weight on your lower back, and help mobilise your spine. A proper studio will want you to do at least a couple of one-to-one sessions first so that they can assess you, and may recommend further single sessions until they feel you're up to joining a class. You get to do it in baggy T-shirt and leggings, and it's not generally competitive, tho' you get the odd pilates-queen with a super-toned body who can do all the moves without breaking sweat. But most people are entirely normal and have come from a position of having back/neck joint problems of some kind.

Do it. If you've had problems for 4 years, it isn't going to go away by itself. Drs will probably also tell you there's nothing they can do. Chiropracters/Osteopaths probably will tell you they can do something, and it may help, but you still end up dependent on running back to them for sorting out. With pilates you get to learn moves and postures that will help you sort your own back and posture out.

Good luck.

Can weight affect it? Im on a "diet", so thats hopefully not going to be an issue soon but id hate to go to GP and be told its my weight

Having read through i agree with frogs the problem is not going to go away on its own Pilates will most certainly help. My pain in back was so awful that i went and saw a chiropractor as a quick fix (advice given by gp) even after 6 session with chiropractor, if i sit too long pain in lower back awful. I know at this point pilates is my only option i need to somehow strenghten abdominal muscles to help my back.
