calpol, albus (sp) do a baby one, not sure thou if it's from 6 months thou, I put a little on a bib - 4 dropps and leave it attatched ont eh side of the cot when he needs it during the night.

also my friend swears by sitting in a steaming bathroom with them to unblock the noses if u didn't want to go down the medicine route.

Think you may be able to use a vaporiser from 4 months (we have a Boots one). Also remove snot with a nasal aspirator (rubber ball with a small tube to suck it out!)and elevate head end of her bed. Medised works well but may not be suitable for one so young so check with pharmacist.

wet a flannel with hot water put karvol/ olbas oil on it and put it on the raidiator at night

Mercy · 11/11/2006 22:03

It's olbas oil.
I think your dd is old enough (but check on the container) for that or if not, Karvol capsules (very similar) which can be sprinkled on the bed linen. Or sprinkled on muslin cloths and tied round cot bars. Also, place a bowl of water in the room (makes it less 'dry').

Another trick is to raise top end/head end of cot. Use a couple of books.

PinkTinsel · 11/11/2006 22:04

if you don't want to bother with nasal aspirator (or dojn't have on) my gp told me to wet a piece of cotton wool with warm water and holdit under ds's nose so he inhaled a couple of drops. it softens the snot and unblocks the nose.

the steamy bathroom thing works quite well too

Mercy · 11/11/2006 22:09

god, I hated the snot remover. They do work but even so...

nearlythree · 11/11/2006 22:11

I can't buy a snot remover anywhere .

Snufflebabe is good, like Vick but milder. Are you bf or ff?

VoodooBanana · 11/11/2006 23:04

Best thing for baby colds is saline nose drops.

We were given these by our GP for my daughter when she was 3 weeks old.

She always seemed to be snuffly and had trouble feeding.

Lay baby down and insert a couple of drops into each nostril.

Do this 10 mins before a feed.

You can buy them in a chemist for approx £1.30

nearlythree · 11/11/2006 23:10

You can buy Olbas junior which is fine from 3 mo. Put some on a muslin and drape it over your shoulder or place on the arm of your chair whilst feeding so that dd can inhale it, it will help to unblock her nose so she can breathe to feed. Also try making your bathroom all steamy then sit on the loo to feed her - you can do that now! Oh, and saline nose drops - again from the chemist, but you must use them well away from a feed or you'll get the whole lot right back at you!

I remember when my dd1 got her first cold, it was so awful to watch! I found getting into a nice warm bath together worked when all else failed.

VoodooBanana · 15/11/2006 13:50

chemist only had olbas jnr, so I got it and last night was much better, I also rolled up a blanket and put it under the mattress so her head was higher.

thanks people, but she still bit my left nipple which now is agony when I feed and has swelled up into a blister -type thing.nice.
