repeat prescription cock-up, can a pharmacist help?

I've messed up - my 16 year old daughter takes the contraceptive pill to control her painful periods, it's working well.

She's in the middle of GCSEs, and I forgot to put her repeat prescription into the GPs and she needs to start taking the pill again tomorrow and we have none.

Will a pharmacist prescribe one strip to tide her over until I can get the repeat prescription filled?

Have you rang the gp to see if they can write you an emergency script?

HeresMyBrightIdea · 30/05/2015 10:24

If you use the same pharmacy, they will probably give you a strip and then take it out of the box when you get your next script - they do that for me all the time but they do know me because I always pick it up from the same place. You probably won't have the same luck if you use a lot of different pharmacies. They might give you a few days worth even if they are being awkward, though. I've never had them actually say no and I was pretty bad at remembering when I started taking the pill!

Agree with above. I use the same pharmacy all the time and they have done this for me. (Though it was their fault that my repeat prescription wasn't there, as they hadn't requested it).

If you always use the same pharmacy then yes, although they may fuss as they can only give you one strip and won't want to split the box as no-one will ever want the rest of the strips.

I've done this and once been given one strip and once the pharmacist just thought sod it and gave the whole lot.

Another option is walk-in today for a new script.

Pharmacists can supply a 30 day emergency supply of medication in certain circumstances. See here: www.nhs.uk/chq/Pages/1011.aspx?CategoryID=73

I have been away and forgotten to take tablets with me (not pill), a pharmacist unknown to me sold me enough to tide me over.
So, you don't always have to visit your regular pharmacy to get such service.

LoxleyBarrett · 30/05/2015 10:48

Any pharmacy can do an emergency supply - take the empty box and the repeat copy with you. As this is a private service the pharmacy may or may not charge you. We tend to charge patients where I work and then refund when they bring in a prescription.

Snowsquonk · 30/05/2015 12:18

I had to call 111, who will put it through to a GP who can then issue a script - either that or go back to the pharmacy where I usually get the script - except I can't remember which one I used!

In England any pharmacy can do an Emergency supply (see above) - you don't have to go to the one you usually use.

madamginger · 30/05/2015 13:51

you have to prove that you are taking the drugs you are asking for and they have to be requested by the person who needs them not a third party.
My pharmacy rarely does them as we are opposite the local out of hours Dr. We only really do them for patients who's scripts we collect if there has been a problem

LoxleyBarrett · 30/05/2015 14:16

Which is why I said to take evidence in my previous post. There would rarely be a reason why a pharmacist should refuse an emergency supply of the pill if the GP surgery is closed. One thing I did forget to mention is that the patient should attend the pharmacy.
