We seem to have some sort of infectious sore tongue disease in our house

I have looked at various webb sites, but our symptoms of sore tongues and aching jaws/teeth never seem to be in the infectious section.
First ds1 complained of a sore mouth and tongue, then dh and the twins seem to be finding eating difficult too.
Now I have it, my tongue feels very raw. There is not much to see, except maybe a few tiny pimples.
Any ideas?

Oral yeast infection? I've had this sort of thing, but only when pregnant, it's normally a sign of a depressed immune system. Maybe you've got a strange strain?

I'd talk to a gp, maybe? Or try going low-sugar diets?

There is a hand foot mouth disease which is highly contagious and this give sores in the mouth.

thanks you two, Alibaldi, that crossed my mind too, but really I think that ds1 is nearly better, so it can't be anything too major. Does really hurt though and wish I could work it out.
It seems horrible that something has gone through the whole family.
NQC, I wonder about diet, but it has come on so suddenly. I don't think that we have a very sugary diet, but who knows. Is oral thrush contagious? What a yuk thought!

Hand foot and mouth is more likely than thrush. When I had oral thrush in pregnancy, I certainly didn't pass it on to DH or DS1. And, thinking about it, my tongue looked weird.

I'd go see a doctor.

Might do on Monday NQC, have now looked it up, and although it is very contagious in small children, not supposed to be in healthy adults. Mind you, I am unfortunately pretty unhealthy
No one has had the type of pronounced blisters that I've seen described, which start in your mouth and then on your hands and feet.
Who knows?

My son & I had hand, foot & mouth a month ago. An outbreak at the nursery! Your symptoms sound the same. My son had a mild temperature for 2 days and didn't eat much for a few weeks, but is fine now. I had small blisters on the back of my tongue.

MumtoBen, ours are on the front of our tongues. When I looked it up it said about getting them on hands etc, did you get this?

..sounds like hand foot & mouth...DS came out with early symptons on a flight over to Florida earlier this year (just mouth sores)..... then DD came out with it next day (mouth sores and blisters on her feet)...then DH came out with it (mouth sores then blisters on hands) We were quarantined for 10 days...and had to stay for an extra week

My dd had Had,foot and mouth discease in the summer.
Symptoms include-blisters/sores in the mouth and or on the tongue, very slight pink blemishes/spots on the palms of the hand and soles of the feet, temperature.I was told that adults can catch it .

Beauregard · 11/11/2006 21:07

There is no treatment really and the guidelines are that they can attend school/nursery even though it is as contagious as chicken pox.

Overrun · 11/11/2006 21:19

Thats useful, do you think I should notify the nursery anyway, silly question really. Mind you ds1 does seem better if not a hundred percent. Twins seem to be starting to recover as well.
My mouth is really sore, but not much to show for it

I would see your Gp and yes notify the nursery and anyone who has come into contact with it.
my dd1 was quite poorly so i kept away from everyone.
It can be contagious for about 3 weeks.

MumtoBen · 12/11/2006 18:55

My son had his blisters on the tip of his tongue and it was bright red. We didn't have spots on the hands or feet though.
